Movie Reviews

Reeling Reviews - 8/10 by Robin CliffordThis low-budget thriller looks more expensive than it is with its imaginative use of set, like the spooky amusement park and, outstandingly, the titular cornfields.
Reeling Reviews - 8/10 by Laura Clifford...no higher compliment could be paid "The Fields" than its constant recollection of the Spanish masterpiece "Spirit of the Beehive"...
Dread Central - 4/10 by Heather WixsonBy no means is the flick terrible, it's just very bland and lacks any sort of thrilling aspects that one would come to expect from a 'thriller.'
Los Angeles Times - 3/10 by Mark OlsenFlat and lifeless, not even the odd object promised by its unlikely cast, who play it straight and with little energy.
User Review - 10/10 by Levi PI was very surprised and impressed by "The Fields". First off, let's get this cleared... if you are looking to see a horror movie, with blood and gore - this is not the movie you are looking for. However, if you are looking for a smart, fast paced suspense thriller with some spine tingling scenes and great acting, that is BASED ON A TRUE STORY - than look no further. The film begins with a young boy named Steven, played by Joshua Ormond. It's quite obvious from the very beginning that his family is falling apart. As he lies in his bed to the sounds of his parents screaming downstairs, it's clear from his facial expressions - he's heard it all before. Joshua was quite good at his portrayal as "Steven" - you can tell that this is one intelligent young boy. And I wish nothing but the best for him and his career. I know a lot of people are wondering and/or are sketchy about Tara Reid's return to acting - but have no fear, the people behind this movie know exactly what kind of talent she has and wanted to prove to everyone that she still has it in her and she does. Going for a new look with her brunette hair and her first time portraying a mother - some, like me, may even forget that this is Tara Reid. She played her part to a tee and did a fantastic job. Because of the family falling apart, Bonnie (Reid) thinks it's best that Steven stays with his grandparents Gladys and Hiney. Gladys is played by the phenomenal Cloris Leachman, while Hiney is played by the impressive Bev Appleton. Bev and Cloris' together are just a hoot. Cloris is by far my favourite part of the film - Every time she opens her mouth, you can guarantee a chuckle. She has some of the best lines in the film. Don't get me wrong, when the film tries to be funny, it succeeds and when it wants there to be tension, it also succeeds. Because the film takes place in the 70's we get a little history of Charles Manson which adds to the eeriness of the film to begin with. As said earlier, the film is very fast paced which I liked, because it never dragged on or left me bored. There were tons of creepy characters in the film - and one scene in particular left shivers running down my spine. It's one of those scenes that stick with you for a long long time (kind of like something out of Paranormal Activity) - but I'll let you watch and see for yourself. In the end, The Fields is a unique thriller which will pleasantly surprise most of it's audience. In a time where all that seems to be released are 3D remakes or sequels, The Fields is a much needed breath of fresh air that needs to be released to the general public immediately. From the beautiful yet creepy settings, to the acting from veterans and newcomers. The Fields will not disappoint and will leave you wanting just a little more, in the best way possible. Keep reminding yourself that it is based on a true story, and I dare you to step foot into a cornfield after the film.
User Review - 10/10 by Chelsea HThought it was excellent. It was just the psychological movie I was looking for, it was artistic and used elements of real human emotion instead of just disgusting images to "shock" an audience. I wouldn't figure that many people appreciate this movie for what it is worth because it was slower and now a days it seems that movies rely so much on visual effect that it takes a special audience to like this movie. It was perfect to me except I think they would have done better if they would have picked a different actress to play Tara Reid's part. The acting, to me, was superb except for her role in the movie. I would recommend this movie to anyone who appreciates a film that takes some time to write and uses psychology to capture an audience rather than high priced effects. Am I going to watch it again? Oh yes.
User Review - 8/10 by Zachary SCreepy but not violent, the fields left me unsettled. Although the ending was wrapped up a little too tightly with a bright red bow for my personal taste. Cloris Leachman was, as always, simply wonderful and very believable. But the music was the best. It was truly the creepiest thing about the film.
User Review - 8/10 by Kim PCloris Leachman at her best. A good film for this reason alone.
User Review - 6/10 by Meriann UI thought this movie was very good, and much better acted than most horror flicks. It also scared me without blood, guts, and special effects. When I found out 3/4's of the way through that the events took place in my region, I was even more intrigued. I think many of the bad reviews are coming from people that want what they expect from something that falls within the horror genre. Give this movie a chance, but don't look for Freddy.
User Review - 6/10 by Carl MYoung Steven is sent to live on his grandparents' farm, where he finds a dead body hidden amongst the corn fields. Unsure of who to trust, Steven keeps the information to himself, but whatever is lurking in the corn now has his scent! There is a heartfelt story buried somewhere within THE FIELDS, but it has yet to be discovered. The film feels like a hazy memory, and one that is filled with irrelevant facts and details that in no way serve to better the plot. At best, it represents the underlying fear and paranoia that spread following the Manson Murders, however, the remote location and un-compelling characters do nothing to draw us in. The documentary-style filming does lend an air of authenticity to the events, along with the set and costume designs. Although we want to root for Joshua Ormond as Steven, he simply isn't prepared to carry the male lead in a feature film. Between this and the general inactivity on-screen, it becomes difficult to recommend THE FIELDS to anyone outside of the True Crime enthusiasts.
