Time OutGeoff AndrewOne of the most imaginative and entrancing horror movies of the silent era.
Slant MagazineEd GonzalezThrough kaleidoscopic composition, Epstein affects Rorschach-like chiaroscuro, every image a dense, sludgy viscera, a looking glass held up to the audience and characters, daring us to pass through.
Parallax ViewSean AxmakerA strange mix of Gothic design, modern austerity, expressionist angles, graceful camerawork and surreal effects, it's an atmospheric classic...
Eye for FilmJennie KermodeA visually masterful film that very much retains its power today, The Fall Of The House Of Usher introduced many of the tropes of the horror genre.
User ReviewAaron WWhile not as flashy as Griffith's photography in "Birth of a Nation" Epstien made a film that's photography is stark, beautiful, and horrifying all at the same time. Based off of one of Poe's most well-known short stories (and one of my personal favorites) the 1928 version of the film is every bit as intense as the story. It maintains the imagery as Poe's story and gives it to us in spades. This is one of the greatest films of the silent era.
User ReviewJesper JMy expectations were soaring as I pressed play on my DVD-player, and when Epstein's vision came to life I knew this would become one of my favorite movies. But why? Well first of all it opened up the door to a phantasmagorial universe of beauty and gloom, which I have only witnessed in one more movie; namely Vampyr by Carl Th. Dreyer. It is difficult to explain, but the beauty of horror has a dimension which transcends the beauty of the normal world. A beauty trapped inside a nightmare, so to speak. Lady Madeline is the embodiment of this idea, being trapped inside a crypt, buried alive! I will keep on searching for more of these black diamonds, but I fear that I have already found the most precious ones...
User ReviewJonathan SMaybe the best thing I've ever seen. Stunning and surrealist and literary and avant garde and really well-acted and-- I don't know. I just love it.
User ReviewJustin LLiked it a lot. Haven't read the short story this was based on, unfortunately. I enjoyed the way that taking Madeleine's life was portrayed, Usher making brush strokes and her standing there, more pale and staggering with every stroke. And the presentation of Usher's anxiety, with the clock going on and on, relentlessly. Amazing atmosphere.
User ReviewGreg DGroundbreaking experimental film that perfectly captures the fevered delirium of Poe's literature.
User ReviewTed Wthis is a great silent film with good camera work and really creepy moments also its one of the first movies to use the cursed house theme 8\10
