Full Plot Details

During the 1950s, the American cargo ship SS Berwind, an old WW2-era Liberty Ship, is stuck in New Zealand without a captain. The captain died of an apparent heart attack but some crew members suspect foul-play. The captain's body is taken away by the Coroner for an autopsy. Uneasy about their presence on the ship, the ship's steward and cook run away while in port, forcing the ship to hire a local Maori cook and his wife as steward. The parent company of the SS Berwind also hires a new captain for it. The new captain, Edwin Rummill, is the First Officer on a luxury cruise-liner but agrees to fly to New Zealand to take charge of the Berwind. Once aboard the Berwind, Edwin Rummill is greeted by an undisciplined crew, demoralized officers and an untidy vessel. Being already three days late, the ship sails immediately. Unknown to Rummill, to his officers and to most of the men, crew members Henry Scott and Leroy Martin are hardened criminals with an evil plan. They are planning to incite the rest of the crew to start a mutiny. They also plan to destroy the radio equipment and to kill everyone aboard the ship and, after drifting on the Pacific for a few months, to claim the salvage fee of a million dollars for the derelict vessel, plus its cargo. Scott and Martin have firearms stashed away in the engine room. Everyone else on the ship is unarmed, save for the Captain who has an old Luger pistol. The ship has food and supplies for six months.

User Review - 6/10 by Ashley HThe Decks Ran Red is an okay film. It is about a band of dishonest seamen who plan a murderous mutiny aboard the S.S. Berwind. James Mason and Dorothy Dandridge give good performances. The script is a little slow in places. Andrew L. Stone did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the adventure and drama.
User Review - 4/10 by jay nRoutine but one of the few chances to see Dorothy Dandridge in a somewhat substantial role.
