Los Angeles TimesNoel MurrayJohnson tries too hard to make all his mayhem meaningful, to minimal effect. Still, this picture should entertain Adkins’ growing base of fans, who ought to appreciate that the star gets more freedom than usual to be delightful as well as dangerous.
We Live EntertainmentFred TopelJesse V. Johnson is quickly becoming Adkins' most lucrative collaborator. He knows how to show off Adkins' skills in distinct ways so each film is different from the last but just as thrilling.
Movie NationRoger MooreIt’s slow-moving and generally unpleasant, unless you want to see the bare bones of fight choreography exposed on screen, “one two three DUCK, one two KICK,” something much more commonplace in the action cinema’s past.
CinapseEd TravisI adore The Debt Collector. It nails the sleazy underground world of Los Angeles, looks fantastic..., and perhaps most importantly achieves what it sets out for both as a buddy comedy and as a throwback to gritty 1970s crime films.
User ReviewGreg Mthis movie was excellent, sorry if you only like remakes and reboots of comic books, this was a nice departure from typical Hollywood formula garbage, can't believe the Audience only gave it 48%
User ReviewHolly RThe comic banter made me laugh, the fight scenes were intense, and the figurative message in the movie made a lot of sense to me after watching the ending, of which made me feel like I felt after watching half the population of the universe turn to dust in the recent Marvel film. While I realize it's not based on a true story (that I'm aware,) it's always nice to see when a bad guy decides to do the right thing.
User ReviewJason Rbetter than rotten CG garbage movie, realistic & human story. best ever movie of Scot Adkins'
User ReviewSheSHereEntertaining actioner whose strongest points are the fighting sequences and the chemistry between the two leads. It is not flawless but for a low budget DTV action movie, it's about as good as it gets. The movie has good pacing and provides some humour, but changes route a bit in the last act leading to a somewhat unsatisfying ending.
User ReviewHarlock_80Once I ve finished to watch the film I had the feeling as it was a mixture between Pulp Fiction and The Nice Guys. Roles and story is surely much more real than those of the above mentioned films. We get some street fights and a morale at the end...something that the poor blockbuster productions seem to have issues with. Su and the golden boy make a perfect match and their interpretation is good, good enough to let "The Debt Collector" stay on top. If this film did not get the success it deserves I am sure the issue is not in the film itself. We have seen a lot of garbage these years that came in front of our nose for the mere fact it was over advertised. A good "action movie", with good actors, trying to give a lesson.
User ReviewJulian KThe Debt Collector: 6 out of 10: A Dojo owner (Scott Adkins) gets a side hustle collecting debts to help save his business and his first weekend out with his new partner (Louis Mandylor) is a lot more than he bargained for. The Good: These guys deserved a better movie. The characters are fairly well acted with Louis Mandylor, in particular, a standout. The set-up is fine and would also make a good film (Think of Stallone in Rocky collecting debts but making the entire movie about that.) There are some good fight scenes and the character interaction keeps the plot moving along for about two-thirds of the movie with limited speed bumps. The film does a nice job making one want to see what whacky job or situation the boys are going to get into next. The Bad: This movie wants so badly to be an old style Tarantino joint. It simply doesn't have the script to carry the water. The character interaction (good acting aside) seems forced with Adkins coming across as whiny rather than the snarky I think they were aiming for. These are cartoon characters in a cartoon world playing it very straight. The movie isn't very realistic. (Protip: Shootouts and fist fights in quiet upscale suburban neighborhoods get police attention very very quickly. I mean these people call the cops if someone is mowing the wrong lawn.) While the movie has a nice pace with colorful characters for the first two thirds it hits a roadblock when it decides to get serious. All of a sudden kids are dying of cancer and somebody has to kneecap Jesus. It is an unfortunate tonal shift where a movie that was about as realistic as Death Watch 3 decides it was going to be End of Watch. The Ugly: What is it with the cows? If you are hoping it isn't an over the top, on the nose allegory prepare to be very disappointed. In Conclusion: There is a fun romp buried under all the arty pretension and wannabe Tarantino riffs. Last act tonal shifts aside I found it enjoyable if eventually disappointing.
