Monthly Film BulletinMFB CriticsThe film is over-long (the flying sequences include some repetition) and the music score is, regrettably, very blatant; but despite these drawbacks, a mood of sober respect is maintained.

User ReviewCharles MMade in 1955 when many participants in the raid were still alive and using Lancaster bombers of the type used in the raid which were in storage, this movie depicts one of the most dramatic and terrifying special raids carried out against Nazi Germany by the Royal Air Force. The screenwriters have followed the story which is so dramatic it doesn't need much spin to make this a nail biting action film. The real personalities of the key people are also colorful enough that the actors follow their words and actions. One of the few World War Two movies that has an authentic feel. 40% of the air crew on the raid were killed. The famous, yet in real life sort of jerk, Wing Commander Guy Gibson died in an air crash toward the end of the war. Barnes Wallis who designed the bouncing bombs which broke the German dams was haunted by the number of young British aircrew killed in the raid for the rest of his life.
User ReviewScott BA patriotic true story of British exploits during WWII. Fantastic performances from the whole cast, unforgettable theme music, a gripping climax, and a heartbreaking final scene with Richard Todd. Stirring stuff!
User ReviewMick GAvoids love stories and glitz, and gets down to a cracking film of two halves, Barnes Wallis's struggle to convince the authorities that the Rhur dams can be breached, and Wing Commander Gibson's struggle to deliver the "bouncing bombs" when they were eventually made. Cracking film!! Even a politically incorrect dog!! Wouldn't get past the censors today!
User ReviewDella MI've lived in "bomber county" all my life and saw this film for the first time when I was very young and it as always been my favorite film, and even now if they show it on TV I have to watch it, even if it is just to point out the distant Lincoln Cathedral in the background. It may not be up to today's standard with all the effects but that's one of the reasons this film is good, it's honest film making at it's best, with a stella cast/acting and (for the most part) accurate story telling (i'm sure a historian could pick holes in it easily enough) it makes for a watchable war movie that is exactly what it says it is. As for the dogs name, well that's history too, Guy Gibson I'm sure never set out to offend anyone, I'm pretty sure he would have no idea what a controversy he would cause the day he named his black labrador, but just rememer that it says n***** on the dogs grave.
User ReviewJoanna TGreat movie...I really love it...some might find it a little slow, and it is in black and white, but it's one of my favs :-) Good action/suspense for an old war movie

User ReviewMartin Dwho wouldnt watch this great movie of a true story its a great film puts to shame all the modern war movies
User ReviewSimon TThe effects are terrible, the lip-synch is off, the MCU in the cockpit just looks wrong and the dog's name is racist. Who gives a f**k? Still the best of the 50's british war movies (which is saying something alongside Ice Cold In Alex, the Cruel Sea etc.), stupendous innovation on show. Just hope the Peter Weir remake doesn't suck.
