CompuserveHarvey S. KartenA bizarre tale of a vampiric countess performed with stilted, faux-Shakespearean dialogue
User ReviewSherry ZQuite an interesting portrayal of Lizbet Bathiry, one of Stoker's model for Dracula (see the book Dracula was a woman.). There are other portrayals of the blood countess, but this one does not go all cartoony and vampirey. There is also the fact that the narrator casts doubt on the truthfulness of the entire story. This again pretty historically accurate. Still, the movie leaves more questions answered than unanswered. All in all a really good movie.
User ReviewTarja MVery good story from Elizabeth Bathory and her for life!I love this! my favourite!
User ReviewJennifer MWow! A horrific, gory story that is well told. Great and talented cast.
User ReviewTom MLove, greed, myth and manipulation are juggled together in Julie Delpyâ(TM)s telling the tale of one of the first famous serial killers, Erzebet Bathory. Itâ(TM)s a tragic story of two lovers pulled apart by so many things out of their control: time, class, war, conquest...Only leaving a hole to be filled by Bathory with an insane notion that drives a need for the precious resource of blood in a misplaced exchange for time and youthfulness. The direction is straightforward and the cast is dower and scheming, manipulating things to their own ends. Delpy tells the tale with a kind of cold economy that really shows a lot of restraint despite the subject matter while maintaining a kind of emotional realism for the folks who were living in those dark times.
User ReviewRoxanne RBRAVO! Congratulations to Ms Julie Delpy who wrote, directed and starred in this great film about the birth and life of Countess Erzebet Bathory, the most prolific female serial killer of the 17th century. I have seen several films depicting the life of Countess Bathory but this one is the best! I was unaware of how her upbringing shaped her to become so cruel. I was also unaware that Erzebet fell in love with a man nearly 20 years younger than her (Istvan Thurzo played by Daniel Bruhl) and despite their love for each other, his father Gyorgy Thurzo played so nicely by William Hurt conspired to end the love affair for ulterior motives. Lots of conspiracy and deceit. The Countess at the time of the affair was 39 years old, and as years went by the loss of her youth was tormenting her when alas, one day she hit her maid and blood splattered on the Countess' face. Since that day, she came to the conclusion that virgin blood will help her retain her youth. Well her position of nobility certainly helped her get away with over 600 murders but once she killed another noble lady, her "luck" ran out. Magnificent performance by Julie Delpy and so glad she brought more insight into this project. BTW this is inspired by true events! Indeed Countess Erzebet Bathory lived during that time period and became notorious in history as the most prolific female serial killer. The ending posed an excellent question because I believe that had she been born a male, her life would have taken a different course, a better one actually as stated by Countess Bathory. Again excellent script and performance by Julie Depy, I was impressed and its available on Netflix WOW, don't wait, watch asap..Highly recommended!
User ReviewLisa ZWell done! I thought this movie was very good. I'm not a good critic but I know what I like.
User ReviewCatine MFranchement, excellent film retraçant la vie de Bathory, on a même du chagrin pour elle à la fin :( Les acteurs sont excellents et l'allemand d'Inglourious Basterds est encore plus sexy x)
User ReviewRus ETrue story every was very wonderful movie!
User ReviewCaroline SThis was probably one of the best movies I've seen this year! From what I have noticed there is not many films about Elizabeth Bathory (maybe there is and in that case I have missed all of them) and Julie Delpy is doing a terrific job both as a director and lead actress. I can recommend this film to everyone and in my opinion this is a movie you should see sometime in your life.
