Her brother, a dissolute fellow, is left out of the inheritance, but at his solicitation and promise to reform, she takes him with her. At the mine they meet Wallace, a thoroughly independent American, who dislikes peerage on general principles. He has had entire charge of the mine subsequent to the death of the uncle. The brother and Wallace instinctively dislike each other. The Countess likes Wallace, but resents his independence. Later, Wallace comes upon the brother at the café, and a fight ensues. The brother is beaten and Wallace promises not to tell his sister. Shortly following this incident, Wallace is alone in the office. With revenge foremost in his mind, the brother places a charge of dynamite under the house, lights the fuse, and retires to a safe distance to watch. When it is about time for the dynamite to explode, the Countess enters the office. Wallace and the Countess leave the office by the rear door. The brother is caught in his own trap and killed. The Countess looks to Wallace for comfort, and finds it.
