EmanuelLevy.Com - 7/10 by Emanuel LevyA routine Boris Karloff horror flick from Universal, nominated for the Interior Decoration Oscar.
User Review - 8/10 by James HA very enjoyable romp from the 40's about unrequited love driving a man to obsession, selfishness and murder, and you really can't go wrong with Boris Karloff, particularly from this vintage. This is especially enjoyable if you're a fan of opera at all. New York City-born director Waggner, most famous for 'The Wolf Man', is decent at this sort of thing, though he got relegated the last phase of his career to TV-work (such as the 60's 'Batman'). Karloff's first colour film (and in Technicolor, no doubt), it's also famous for using the same sets as 'The Phantom of the Opera', made the previous year--the oldest surviving movie set. I came across this in an excellent 5-film pack of Karloff-starred thrillers from the late 30's and early 40's. Both the boxed set and this individual film are highly recommended to fans of the star's work.
User Review - 8/10 by Eric HIn Karloff's first color film, producer-director George Waggner hoped to duplicate his previous Success of Phantom of the Opera. He united him with its star Susanna Foster and used the same Phantom stage.Climax was a remake in 1944, the role and plot was enlarged to create an elaborate costume vehicle for Karloff and the Technicolor camera. THe CLIMAX starts off on a fine ghoulish tangent, but soon wanders off the straight, narrow and creepy path onto a sidetrack of conventional boy-girl doings with Karloff turned more than a little ridiculous among a group of harmless music lovers whose member includes a boy king. George Waggner, the director, knows a thing or two about the color camera. For Karloff's flash-back memories he uses a circle in clear focus in the center of the screen, surrounded by blurred, varicolored light.. THE Climax has too much difficulty deciding whether to keep its mind on music or murder.
User Review - 6/10 by Orlok WArt direction and genuine suspense make for an enjoyable ride!!
User Review - 6/10 by Aj VThe story sounds cool, and the movie is pretty good most of the time, but then you realize that the main character's obsession with not wanting to hear anyone sing that song again, but still wanting to work at the opera, isn't practical, but it's predictable.
User Review - 6/10 by Tristan DAn underrated chiller although still not without its problems. There is no real tension or mystery and the way everyone gullibly lets Karloff take control of Foster makes the film drag. The musical numbers are also disgustingly out of place for the time period. But The Climax is a gorgeous film, with amazing technicolor design serving as the backdrop for Foster's beautiful singing and Karloffs heated vengence. Turhan Bey is also a riot as he eats his theater program.
User Review - 2/10 by Tristan PAwful. Karloff is at his absolute worst here, and the film seems to be ashamed of itself whenever it starts to veer towards horror. I'll take any chance to see Gale Sondergaard in a horror film.
