Boston GlobeMichael BlowenTo say it right out, The Bostonians is the best movie I've seen all year.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyMerchant Ivory screen adaptation of Henry James' novel is handsome, but suffers from the miscasting of Christopher Reeve and Madeleine Potter, though Vanessa Redgrave is decent.
New York TimesVincent Canby''The Bostonians'' is, from its opening shot to last, a rare delight, a high comedy with tragic undertones, acted to passionate perfection by a cast of the best actors ever assembled by the Merchant-Ivory-Jhabvala team.
The New York TimesJanet MaslinThe moral ambiguity of James's novel has been skillfully captured in the film, as has its remarkable modernity.
The Globe and Mail (Toronto)Jay ScottRuth Prawer Jhabvala's screenplay is less a response to its source than a careful college outline of it.
Chicago ReaderDave KehrYou get the plot, all right, but that's all you get - no body, no texture, no rhythm, no shading.
User ReviewZanalee ZRedgrave and Reeves (well more Redgrave than Reeves he is such a charming bastard) are wonderful as two figures at extreme opposites of the womens suffragist movement battling for the attentions and affections of a young political ingenue who struggles herself against the power spells of both her benefactress and her lover. The movie boldly addresses some controversial themes and definitions of feminism and the individual weaknesses that can erode the struggle of a movement.
User ReviewVicky PA sweet film. Christopher Reeve looks hansome and plays well throughout. I liked the storyline, it was interesting to watch. Some of the characters you can really feel their frustration or admiration. I enjoyed it, I watched it twice. =)
User ReviewPansy GI would have liked to see more push and pull in this film. Verena is meant to be charming, but I gather that she is also supposed to be tormented by all the people who want to use her brilliance to power their own agenda. Basil's character comes over as a little creepy.
User ReviewJohn BAn early Merchant-Ivory offering. It frankly just isn't very good. Poor Christopher Reeve had real problems when he had to stretch himself.
