User ReviewJason DThe Borrower (which is dangerously similar to the superior 80's Sci-fi Horror film The Hidden) is about an alien criminal that has been transformed and banished to Earth to rot with human beings (which is apparently worse than execution). The alien's human body is weak and requires sustenance in the form of other humans, whose heads he takes and adapts to and bodies he consumes. The lineup of victims the alien kills, becomes, and eats is an impressive one, starting with genre actor Tom Towles (House of 1,000 Corpses, Home Sick), then huggy bear himself Antonio Fargas. There's even a transformation between a dog in a particularly hilarious sequence. For the most part, this film is total cheese, though it is entertaining and does not skimp on the gore and violence. There's also a good story within the film as two cops (Rae Dawn Chong and Don Gordon) try to solve the case of the missing heads and dead bodies, while trying to contend with a particularly nasty rapist that is on the loose within the streets and haunting Chong's character. We also get to see makeup effects from a young Kevin Yagher, as well as an even younger KNB Effects team before they started said famous effects team. The BIGGEST surprise with this film is the director, who is none other than John McNaughton, director of the infamously good and very dark Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. I'm guessing most people wouldn't have thought McNaughton would have followed up such a movie with something so polar opposite, but then again, it showed McNaughton had great range. This film is definitely different, but pretty fun. This is one film that seriously needs to have a special edition DVD made of.
User ReviewSteve KWet & splattery horror/sci-fi gore-party detailing the adventures of a not-so-happy-go-lucky alien criminal who has a rather inconvenient affliction. It seems his head keeps on exploding, so after he escapes his captivity and winds up on Planet Earth, he begins harvesting noggins from some not-so-willing human donors, continuing the process as inexplicably, their heads explode as well! Nonsensical & entertaining, with Rae Dawn Chong as a cop on the case, and Antonio Fargas, TV's "Huggy-Bear" from "Starsky and Hutch", as one of the astral-axe-man's many hapless victims.
User ReviewSpookie MCrazy b-sci-fi/horror with lots of heads getting ripped off. Decent gore effects by Kevin Yagher. The story is all over the place and some of the acting is atrocious. Overall good b-movie fun from the dir of Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer.

User ReviewAdam EHarmless gore fun that whizzes by at a happy pace and never outstays its welcome! Its midly funny and borrows from a hell of a lot of other movies but at the end of the day its fun. The plot is threadbare and has 2 police pople trying to find an alien that takes peoples heads off when his gets knackered! Thats its. Theres scenes of the police chasing him and another serial killer thats on the loose and the alien wanders around confused a lot. This film seems to have no real direction thou kinda like its not sure what it wants to be. They just throw stuff at the screen (sex, violence and a guy with a dog for a head!) and see what happens. Most of it works but it means the final payoff at the end just comes and goes. The cops are just there, theres not much depth to them and there story arc ending is a bit naff. I suppose the main problem is that theres no real ending because the alien is not malicious. It only kills people when its head is knackered and it needs a new one then it eats there body. It never goes on a massive rampage and because it for the most part does not talk theres no threat ended there. They try at the end to give it an extra jolt but it just does not work. Fun movie thou and you never get bored as the pace never flags. Entertaining nonscence is the best description of this :)
User ReviewJason JA dark comedy. A criminal alien is genetically devolved and vanquished to Earth in human form. There he discovers that his head has a habit of exploding, forcing him to find another replacement and eventually another one. This is an odd, bizarre little movie... the whole thing is as anticlimactic as it gets and there's no excitement or suspense at all. It suffers from a languishing last quarter, muddled writing with a redundant sub-plot. The gore aspect might interest some people and there are a couple of funny moments such as the bonkers scene in which the creature, wearing the head of a dog, attacks and kills a metal-head, but this level of craziness isn't maintained for longâ"a shame, because this is exactly the kind of lunacy the movie needed more of. Overall it ain't that good and I can't really recommend it.

User ReviewJustin AIt was like two different movies fighting with each other to be on the screen. One movie: An alien comes to earth and needs to steal people's heads by ripping them off and placing them on his body. The other movie: A street-wise cop is trying to stop an escaped criminal. You'd think they mesh together, but they really don't. Maybe at the end they sort of do, but it was entirely unnecessary. Besides, the ending is very anticlimactic and solves absolutely nothing (it almost seemed as if they were trying to leave the door open for a sequel). I like the comedy/sci-fi/horror thing they were going for, but the whole Rae Dawn Chong storyline of the movie gets unnecessarily dark at one point (a woman cop gets beat down, tied up, and raped). What was the point? It brought down the mood of the movie and sapped out some of the fun. Still, there's lots of blood and gore, some memorable and funny scenes (the dog being one of them), and it was an okay watch. This movie kind of deserves a DVD treatment, but I guess this will just be one of those forgotten VHS movies that many will remember from the video store days only to be forgotten over time. If you find a bootleg it's worth checking out.
