Leave your thoughts about The Big Ugly.
Chicago Sun-TimesRichard RoeperA wildly entertaining, over-the-top, blood-soaked, noir-Western from director/co-writer Scott Wiper that’s filled with stunning visuals of the breathtaking and sometimes foreboding countryside (with Morehead, Kentucky, standing in for West Virginia) and searing performances from the ensemble cast.
Film ThreatAndrew StoverThe Big Ugly is a fascinating beast. While the premise of the film sounds annoyingly trite, writer-director Scott Wiper develops an engaging batch of characters.
Austin ChronicleRichard WhittakerWhile not exactly rote, the script undeniably feels a little derivative in places.
The GuardianLeslie FelperinIt plays like several plots, genres and mood boards all mashed together, which makes the end result interesting but not entirely successful.
Movie NationRoger MooreStupid scene follows bloated speech, all the way through to a finale set up to go off, but which fizzles like soggy fireworks.
The Hollywood ReporterFrank ScheckWhat makes The Big Ugly watchable are the authentic locations and the veteran actors who bring admirable conviction to their tough guy roles.
Time OutPhil de SemlyenIt’s oh-so-familiar terrain, yet writer-director Scott Wiper lets a deadening sense of inertia creep in, leaving the payoff feeling like a Guy Ritchie movie played at the wrong speed.
User ReviewimthenoobPerlman and McDowell do a phenomenal job with an incredibly inconsistent, poorly written script written by someone who is seemingly conflicted on if the movie should be one about drama, romance, action or a mix of all of the three. With subplots all over the place, This movie heavily relied on the acting of the cast to carry it. For the most part, The cast delivers but again, You can only do so much with a poorly written script that shines at some moments but mostly fails for the rest of it. I don't imagine many walking away from this truly satisfied.
