Mathias, an Alsatian innkeeper, murders a rich Pole staying at his inn But Mathias' conscience will not let him rest, and the murdered man's spirit drives the innkeeper nearly mad. The victim's brother calls for an inquest and brings with him a sideshow mesmerist supposedly able to read minds. | User ReviewJoel AThis movie combines elements from other stories, but it's supposed to be based on Poe's The Bells poem. I didn't understand the ending, but the rest of the movie was okay. Overall a so-so film. |
| User ReviewMara BLesser known silent film based on the French play and inspired by the Edgar Allen Poe poem. Good photography and good acting in this formula "morality tale." The story is kind of like 'The Tell Tale Heart' except the murderer hears bells instead of a beating heart. |
