Movie Reviews

House Next Door - 9/10 by Keith UhlichThe Baron of Arizona (1950) is all thumbs, as much a forgery as the one perpetrated by its protagonist James Addison Reavis (Vincent Price).
Kinetofilm - 9/10 by Brian HolcombThe craziest true story I've never heard of that turned out to be pretty damn true. Even with Fuller shouting his own melodramatic version of the truth at the top of his lungs
CinePassion - 8/10 by Fernando F. CroceA Balzacian comedy recalled by a man who, like Fuller, can't help admiring a rogue who can wield ingenuity in a wolfish world
EmanuelLevy.Com - 8/10 by Emanuel LevyStarring Vincent Price, Sam Fuller's second feature is a bizarre noirish Western, marred by preposterous plotting, but extremely well shot by ace lesner James Wong Howe.
User Review - 10/10 by Donovan DOne way to describe this movie is that it was a blast. I love how this outrageous and scandalous claim, detrimental to a state's union entrance could and could have caused what it did. It's so Fuller to use something extravagant to espose lots of underlying discord, like when he did with The Naked Kiss and even seen in I Shot Jesse James. The personal torture comes out very well even in this 3 Act narrativie.
User Review - 10/10 by Steve WVincent Price shows he's not just a horror movie man. In this wildly fact-based drama about James Reavis, it shows the fraudster scheming his crazy plan to forge documents based on a fictional royal of Spanish descent so he can marry her and then become the Baron of Arizona. Vincent Price is at his absolute best, a cunning and sly man who talks his way out of any situation and will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. The biggest things about this performance is that they build on it and show his final redemption, rather than just paint him to be a trickster. The movie is a bit slow at times, but a beautiful tale of expectations and soul searching wrapped around a shiny Spanish gold leaf.
User Review - 8/10 by Eric HHe's just a lot of fancy words... James Reavis is a former government official that was in charge of filing key paperwork and he spent his time researching laws and documentation. He trains himself to be a master forger and discovers a loop hole that provides certain descendants with all of the land of Arizona and southern Colorado. He plans and executes a plan that allows him to be sole owner of 1.5 American states. Can the government thwart Reavis' plan? "Only peasants cry." Samuel Fuller, director of The Naked Kiss, I Shot Jesse James, The Steel Helmet, Run of the Arrow, Forty Guns, Shock Corridor, and The Crimson Kimono, delivers Baron of Arizona. The storyline for this picture is very interesting and the fact it is based on a true story makes it even more fascinating. The acting was excellent and the cast includes Vincent Price, Ellen Drew, Reed Hadley, Beulah Bondi, and Margia Dean. "He had more important things to do..." This was on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) not too long ago so I had to DVR it. Seeing Price in a western is always a treat and this was no different. I loved seeing a young and sly Price in a historical piece from this era. This is definitely worth a viewing and your time. "Why should we trust you?" Grade: B
User Review - 8/10 by Orlok WSome anachronisms, but overall, a fun movie that tells the true story of a man who literally tried to steal Arizona. Vincent Price is amazing. He doesn't get enough credit for his roles that aren't mad scientists.
User Review - 8/10 by Brian SI found this bit of untold History Fascinating, even if a bit slow at times, I found it Dramatic & Well Done.Vincent Price was very effective in this Dramatic Role.I actually think of this Movie whenever I get to Arizona, so I guess it made somewhat of an impact.
User Review - 8/10 by Kevin DImproves dramatically after a rocky start. The opening exposition had me rolling my eyes, and the elaborate scheme Price conceives to seize ownership of the territory, while fascinating in concept, remains a leaden series of unconvincing plot points. Once the plan is set in motion, the film gels nicely. Price remains a compelling antihero throughout and has a strong chemistry with Ellen Drew.
