Hugo is a brilliant mid-Victorian scientist, loved and respected by his family and friends, admired by his colleagues. But he is a man quickly becoming obsessed with a curious and frightening question... what is the mysterious apparition found in the photographs of his dying subjects? Hugo brings to a family boating party his newest invention-a motion picture camera. The party quickly turns into a disaster as he captures on film the tragic drowning of his wife and son. When the film is replayed later, the same ghostlike presence appears. It flies towards his son, and vanishes inside his dying body. Has Hugo discovered The Asphyx, the spirit of the dead described in Greek mythology? A spirit which lives in constant agony, not finding rest until it takes possession of a human body? Could the spirit, if captured, become the key to immortality? Hugo is compelled to find the answers. It is a ghoulish search, with eternally haunting results.

Combustible CelluloidJeffrey M. AndersonOverall, this is a unique and memorable little chiller.
User ReviewGarland HAfter a hard diet of some of the most grotesque and gruesome horror flicks I could find (everything from the old video nasties to J-snuff shit like the Guinea Pig series, August Underground trash and the new French extreme) this was a surprising and refreshing change of pace for me. It was intelligent and well developed story. For me the style was very reminiscent of the old gothic thrillers of the same era including Black Sabbath and Mask of Death or the original Wicker Man...it was dark, alluring, and obscure (the asphyx, a personal spirit of death that manifests at the moment before death? a wandering immortal much like the "eternal jew" forever lamenting the misdeeds of his life? a man trying desperate measures to preserve his family after a horrific accident he feels responsible for? An amalgamation of classic themes that come together in rare form with emergent properties that surpass their individual sum.). For me the subject material hit on subtle and scary themes that most modern fare seems to glaze over with gore. It was terrifying in it's memento mori effect, much like the original Frankenstein story. I really enjoyed this film on a number of levels and I personally believe it to be among the best of its generation. A hidden gem.
User ReviewScott WWhat an awesome concept for a movie! Thoroughly enjoyed it.
User ReviewFilmGrinder S"The smudge!"-Sir Hugo Cunningham (Robert Stephens) Possibly, influenced those responsible for GHOSTBUSTERS.
User ReviewBrian RVictorian scientist Sir Hugo Cunningham discovers the spirit of death and manages to capture it, thereby achieving immortality. Sophisticated nonsense, elevated by excellent production design and fine performances by Sir Robert Stephens, Robert Powell, Roy from Eastenders and a bewildered and squeaky guinea pig who turns out to be immortal too!
User ReviewAndrew GThere is NO other film like this...The atmos is genuine, and the acting is surprisingly good...and the plot? Nothing like it ever...(well maybe GHOSTBUSTERS) but this Victoria Era, Jules Verne-like tale of trapping the essence of a human before they die, to keep them alive, is really not one you hear about too much of...Excellent props, and generally creepy, this is one of my faves. Gorewhore Out.
User ReviewJason DHow many different ways can you try not to kill somebody and fail spectacularly! The old ones are the best!!!
User ReviewPrivate URemember seeing this film when i was a young lad. 15 years on and watched it again. If anything it gets better with age.
User ReviewLafe FLovely, low key film of creeping dread. A real sense of melancholy pervades this one, right up until the terrific final shot. Worth a look.
User ReviewJack YThe sort of horror that they do not make nowadays that required an audience to think. Stephens discovers a way to keep the asphyxa creature that comes for souls at the point of deathfrom taking its prey. After experimenting on himself, he offers to immortalize his daughter and her fiancé, unaware of the consequences of his earlier actions. Great concept and still haunting 30-plus years on.
