Over the course of the film can they overcome the obstacles before them? Will they overcome themselves? Subplots involve worthy characters excellently played that enhance the drama. Juvenile court, hospital, reform school, dock workers, and suburban life are backdrop scenes for the drama. Be prepared to be surprised by the sheer edge of despair which this film brings to you quickly. An abyss is glimpsed. Those who enjoy sheltered lives may recoil. Life is tough here. The characters are tough too. They don't give up.
