Movie Reviews

User Review - 10/10 by Elle BThis movie, produced in 1974, shows the roles that my mother's generation played out between men and women. Women socializing over "demonstration parties" (i.e., Tupperware parties, lingerie parties, toy demonstrations), men gathering for football and beer. No one really talking about anything of substance, never really knowing each other or themselves. When Connie's (Maureen Stapelton) daughter challenges her to "rap" with her friends ("talk", for those not quite 40), she feels put off by the attitudes of "today's women." But at their "Wonder Wear" lingerie party, she spontaneously asks her friends why they never "just talk." What emerges is a consciousness-raising group of 7 friends, who move from "what do we have to talk about -- we're all happy?" to recognizing their dissatisfaction with their roles as women to comforting a friend after a mastectomy. Through it all, it shows the older women learning from the younger -- Connie learning from her daughter about "loving yourself before you can really love another person." It shows how far we've come -- and how we still keep playing out the same roles, just with different rules. For those who think "consciousness-raising groups" are dead and gone, this movie will make you think about starting one with your friends.
