In August 1996, bus drivers Marcel Van Loock and Wim Moreels are apprehended by the Moroccan Customs for drug trafficking. Inside their bus, hidden behind a false compartment, they have discovered 700 pounds of hashish. Although the owner of the bus company is arrested as well and makes a full confession clearly indicating that both drivers were unaware of the hidden drugs, the Moroccan judge sentences both men to 5 years in the Moroccan prison of Tangiers. Nothing could have prepared the two men for life inside a Moroccan prison. Without food, clothes or medical care, they must learn how to take care of themselves to survive their stay in prison. Corrupt guards, corrupt lawyers and judges, a consul who doesn't care and frequent beatings are only part of the terrible prison. Meanwhile their families at home are left without any information, any help or any hope - finding out that their own government doesn't care for Belgian people in prisons abroad.

User ReviewTalitha BThis movie left me without words and deeply impressed...
User ReviewLilo CI have no choice but rate this movie full marks, probably because I'm Flemish myself. Anyway this drama is based on real events, which I remember reading in the newspapers. This film makes me think about this other film called Closet Land where an innocent female writer is being tortured in a foreign prison. In De hel van Tanger the name of the country is Morocco. This fact makes it easier to judge the country and as a result I could read Flixster reviews where it says "I will never travel to Morocco any more!". A bit of an injustice because what these Flixster users don't realize is that this kind of torture happens in many poor countries other than Morocco. It might have been better to hide the name of the country. It's absolutely worth watching and it doesn't make the viewer glad. I hope this movie - as well as Closet Land - helps fighting injustice. Let's just give poor Dawit Isaak a minute of attention. He's just one of the currently tortured prisoners the media is fighting for, so far unsuccessfully.
User ReviewLUC DGreat Belgian movie. After seeing this movie I do not want to go to Maroc.
User ReviewWieland ROne of Belgian's greatest films. It's about the hard life in jail in Marocco for an innocent man.
