From the inexhaustible imagination of an eloquent writer, a creative costume designer, and an inspired graphic artist who assemble in an abandoned but magical old cinema, six allegorical tales of heroism, kindness and love intertwine with a multi-cultural journey in history at the four corners of the earth. Starting off in Medieval Europe, an unspeakable secret burdens a love-smitten young prince--while at an exotic place in the West Indies--an intrepid adventurer is aided in his quest by an unexpected trio of supporters. Next, the fatalist citizens of the extravagant Aztec City of Gold finally get their Chosen One, as a passionate boy finds his true calling somewhere in a sun-kissed West-African village. Then, a noble Tibetan youth who enjoys the King's trust brings himself to an impossibly painful dilemma--and, lastly--a fervent couple of youthful lovers is torn by a venomous curse. These are the enchanting stories of the night, where everything is possible in the name of love.

Movie Reviews

New York Post - 9/10 by Farran Smith NehmeMore likely to play well with older children, due to its split-up story line, Ocelot's creation is like nothing else they are likely to see animating the multiplex.
Slant Magazine - 8/10 by Joseph Jon LanthierMichel Ocelot's recent cartoons cleverly advance Lotte Reiniger's prototypical stop-motion technique into the digital age.
Boston Phoenix - 8/10 by Brett MichelThe kaleidoscopic backgrounds offer a colorful counterpoint to the simple silhouettes that form the people, animals, and mythical beasts populating the six fables, each of which end with a ironic twist.
Empire Magazine - 8/10 by David ParkinsonMichel Ocelot's ravishing animation and magical storytelling is a delight from start to finish.
Film4 - 8/10 by Film4 StaffShot through with romance and glimpses of the kind of silly humour that made A Town Called Panic (2009) so popular, children and adults should be kept quite happy by this solid, intelligent family film.
Chicago Reader - 8/10 by J. R. JonesThe movie never comes close to replicating the spell that Reiniger was able to cast using much more primitive techniques, which underlines a chronic problem of computer animation: its very precision squeezes all the magic from the magic lantern.
Seattle Times - 8/10 by Jeff ShannonSix mostly engaging fairy tales are digitally rendered with silhouetted characters performing in front of vivid, colorful backgrounds.
Alternate Ending - 8/10 by Tim BraytonThe film is a marvel, and everybody with any affection for animation is duty-bound to see it.
Common Sense Media - 8/10 by Renee SchonfeldSix stunningly animated fairy tales with a few mild scares
Little White Lies - 8/10 by Adam WoodwardA uniquely joyful experience from a true original.
