Soon the imprisoned man is engaged in absurd and hilarious attempts to escape the gleaming room, releasing random objects from the walls, creating a life sized mouse trap game in which a rope, a toilet plunger and an earthenware jug full of sushi might just be the keys to his escape. Meanwhile, in a dusty town, a green masked Mexican wrestler known as Escargot Man prepares for an important match. His family gathers around him, worried about his seeming impassivity before battle.

User ReviewChristopher BMy favourite film of this year's TIFF. Funny, intelligent and very creative. I wouldn't dare give anything away in this constantly surprising film, but I would suggest seeing it as fast as you can. I'm fairly certain this one will become a classic.
User ReviewMago BUna de las concepciones teogónicas y cosmogónicas más inteligentes, divertidas y brillantes que he presenciado.
User ReviewJellis E????? I don't get it. Is that someone's dream? Ok so the nun prays and is answered. But the answer doesn't come from the hand of god so much that it came from a japanese guy touching a penis symbol on a wall in limbo. So I guess that means something as absurd as what we witnessed is as good as a reason as anything else to explain the workings of the universe. My guess is when he touches god's penis the ultimate thing that could possibly happen happens; the big bang? It feels like it has something to do with embiggening silliness and cause and effect, or something. i just saw it so i still need to digest it before i finish this review. BBL. Maybe.

User ReviewTwins SIf you thought OLDBOY and Saw had the most original and weird beginning..WATCH THIS ONE! Its we think a comedy...but so so weird..You will make many opinions on this movie.... It is a movie in between, can not really define it, but if you are looking for something different, and original...THIS IS THE ONE you want to watch. (If you do not switch it off sooner)
User ReviewWill DWeird but hilarious... the ending does padded out and it is all in interpretations about what is going on.
User ReviewAmanda PYou gotta love the weirdness that pours out of Japanese Cinema.
User ReviewMe AI found the final collage a bit pretentious, but otherwise a great movie of the "crazy" genre. :)
User ReviewEmma PIf you're expecting Matsumoto's 2nd movie to be like Big Man Japan then you're in for a surprise as it's completely different in tone but no less funny nevertheless. Symbol see-saws between two stories and is shown in three chapters which are labeled Education, Implementation and Future. There's the story of an out-of-shape Mexican wrestler known as "Escargot Man" as he prepares for a title fight in some tiny dusty little village. And simultaneously, there's the story being told of a Japanese man who awakes to find himself in a large, all white rectangular room with no doors or windows. How are these two stories linked together - well at first they don't but just wait until the final third when both plots start combine together in a very hilarious way. Symbol is a very odd situational comedy. It's silly yet artsy, thoughtful in parts, anarchic in its delivery and overall plain crazy. I have no idea what it was about though, its meaning or what it's meant to symbolize. It defies attempts to categorize it. Very unique and entertaining throughout, even though the last fifteen minutes get really bizarre and kind of artsy. This movie is not to be missed. You will probably never see anything quite as weird and funny like this. I loved it. Hitoshi Matsumoto is a clever and intelligent comedian. Highly recommended.
