User ReviewTom WClassic "Ronin without a Cause" film!
User ReviewJohn SAnother hit from Hideo Gosha. I like this guy. He could make strong action flicks, that are also sensitive, and full of life and intrigue. Action flicks today are so screwed up. They give you unrealistic action containing fake characters. This was the polar opposite :] After watching, my friend and I realized it has only about a million similarities to the anime show Samurai Champloo (you should really check that out if you dig the chanbara stuff). Yea, nothin else worth noting. It's a great slice (eh, you like what I did there?....sorry)
User ReviewMJS MDammit, Criterion Collection, why are you so damn awesome??? You are almost (you hear me? ALMOST) as awesome as this movie!! Mikijiro Hira is just a plain badass actor and a badass swordsman. I highly recommend this Samurai gem of a movie. Excellent storytelling and some amazing samurai sword battles. One of the best out there. The theme of several different characters struggling with their own pride and inner demons really spins nicely with little to no confusion.
User ReviewCharles PSword of the Beast by Hideo Gosha is a samurai film taking place almost entirely outside in a forest atop a mountain where gold is located. The lush landscapes add a beautiful and timeless backdrop against a wonderful story of betrayal and lost honor. Mikijiro Hira (13 Assassins was a recent Miike film he starred in). plays Gennosuke and infuses his character with all the attributes of the wild beast he has become, yet still retains honor and his humanity in the end. The story is a complex and layered piece that involves several characters and the involvement of Gennosuke which in one way or another helps him to find his honor once again. The film is filled to the brim with stunning battles and duels, all of which seamlessly take place in the wilderness and add a real artistic beauty to the action. This is truly a masterpiece of samurai and Japanese cinema!
User ReviewOctavio MGennosuke, a renegade ronin, is one of the best on screen bad asses. With beautiful natural exteriors photographed in stark black and white, confident directing from Gosha, very good swordfighting scenes from actors who know their trade and decent performances all around, Sword of the Beast should appeal to all jidai-geki fans. It's neither as monolithic and tragic as Masaki Kobayashi's work from the same time nor as lyrical as Kurosawa's, but it stands somewhere in the middle, stripped to the essentials with a focus on story and theme.
User ReviewBen BI know that this is blasphemy, but I liked this film more than many of the Akira Kurosawa samurai genre films I seen. The story, the action, and the lead to the ending are what really seal the deal for me.
User ReviewKevin LAn increasingly complex plot against a beautiful Japanese landscape.
User ReviewGregory DA very good film. Excellent character study of several people struggling with the demons of honor and duty in the face fo injustice and evil. Haunting score adds to the enjoyment.
User ReviewWill CReally enjoyed it. Good story, well developed characters, and some of the best sword fighting that I have ever seen.
User ReviewWilliam FDoes Mikijiro Hira have the most intense eyebrows in the history of cinema? I believe that we may, with the Criterion release of this film, definitively say yes.
