Chicago Reader - 10/10 by Jonathan Rosenbaum[Brooks's] second Williams adaptation (1962) is literally a form of emasculation that offers little indication of what made the original play interesting (especially in Elia Kazan’s stage production), despite the fact that Paul Newman and Geraldine Page are called on to reprise their original roles—as a hustler returning to his southern hometown and a Hollywood has-been—and do a fair job with Brooks’s hopeless script.
Chicago Tribune - 9/10 by Michael WilmingtonSweet Bird of Youth is a tamer and tidied but arresting version of Tennessee Williams' Broadway play. It's a glossy, engrossing hunk of motion picture entertainment, slickly produced by Berman.
Film Freak Central - 8/10 by Walter ChawThere is no clearer face for the conflict and despondency of the decade of the sixties than Newman's magnificent bastards.
Filmcritic.com - 6/10 by Christopher NullThe film gets a little bogged down in minutiae and irrelevant side plots, but on the whole it's solid and searing.
Los Angeles Times - 6/10 by Terry AtkinsonBrooks' direction seems a little too stolid for all the sleazy, flaming passions.
Variety - 6/10 by Variety StaffIt's a glossy, engrossing hunk of motion picture entertainment, slickly produced by Berman.
DVDJournal.com - 5/10 by Mark BourneWhen approaching 1962's Sweet Bird of Youth, go for the parts rather than the whole.... [T]he film is a long drive through swampy melodrama.
Las Vegas Review-Journal - 4/10 by Carol ClingNewman and Page elevate Williams' melodramatic romance.
The New York Times - 4/10 by Bosley CrowtherSweet Bird of Youth, for all its graphics and the vigorous performance of its top roles, has the taint of an engineered soap opera, wherein the soap is simply made of lye, that's all.
User Review - 10/10 by Olga Bone of Paul Newman best movies! Love will save everyone
