Leave your thoughts about Suddenly, Last Summer.
Chicago ReaderDave KehrThe cast packs enough sexual ambiguity to satisfy the most rabid Williams fan (not to mention a screenplay by Gore Vidal), but Mankiewicz leaves much of the innuendo unexplored -- thankfully, perhaps.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyBy Tennessee Williams' standards, the text is trashy and overwroght, but at the time, homosexuality and cannibalism stirred such a controversy that the movie became one of the playwright's most successful Hollywood adaptations.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)Ken HankeFine version of the story with Hepburn as a fascinating monster.
Empire MagazineKim NewmanSuperbly adapted with blistering performances from Taylor and Hepburn.
The SpectatorIsabel QuiglyI found Suddenly, Last Summer hollow, unproductive, unalive, and above all stagey, not cinematic.
Kansas City KansanSteve CrumVery controversial for its time, and still packs a wallop.
User ReviewHollis GJoder!!!!!!!!! que gran clásico, un excelente reparto y una dirección magistral, una peli condenadamente absorbente que no se puede parar de mirar hasta el final
User ReviewThomas MSuddenly, Last Summer is a superb and terrifying film, that unfortunately seems to be a bit underrated. This film has a great plot with many twists and turns, and also has a wonderful cast, especially with the ever-so-great Katharine Hepburn playing the menacing Violet Venable, who I think is one of the most frightening characters ever portrayed in a film. Elizabeth Taylor is also spectacular in her role as a mental patient with stories no one will believe. The climax of the film is harrowing and very intense, and one of the memorable climaxes I've seen in awhile. This film is scary as hell, superbly acted, brilliantly written, and also insightful with its thoughts about the cruelties of life. See it now if you get the chance to.
User ReviewJeff BQuite some controversial subjects to tackle in 1959 and very well done. Quite progressive for its time. There are 4 main controversial issues explored in this film and I won't tell you what they are so as not to spoil the story but suffice it to say that, along with being an intriguing film about human depravity, it gives much food for thought. The acting was superb. It is always a joy to watch Katherine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor act and quite a pleasure to see a young Montgomery Clift as the level headed doctor. I highly recommend this film.
User ReviewAaron BBeautiful Movie filled with an amazing performance for Elizabeth Taylor
