Eye for Film - 7/10 by Jennie KermodeAn intelligent film which ably demonstrates how disability can complicate life, Stutterer deserves a lot of praise for its script, direction and editing.
User Review - 10/10 by Byron BI saw this Oscar winning live action short in a set of shorts at the Cleveland International Film Festival. Online dating in the modern world. A simple story told well. Uplifting and romantic.
User Review - 10/10 by Michael DThe Oscar-nominated live action short that I loved the most but didn't expect to win because it wasn't "important" and topical enough. On the surface, it's a sweet love story about a man whose interior monologue is articulate and clever, but whose vocalized speech is hampered by stops and starts. He attempts online dating, memorizes and trains himself to recite famous quotations to his dad, and even learns sign language, but still feels too crippled by anxiety to meet his internet girlfriend in person. The screenplay deftly captures the cacophonous swirl of words he wishes he could say, and I really enjoy his calming tactic of listing the letters of the alphabet. It's the clearest and most succinct of the films, but it's also the whitest (American production with British actors and setting) with the stigma of privilege that comes from seemingly low-stakes romantic comedy. Nevertheless, it did win, and perhaps it's not so dissimilar from the other films after all. It's about what gets lost in translation, and it depicts the struggle between the abled, the disabled, and perhaps the differently abled.
User Review - 8/10 by Evan E"Stutterer" (United Kingdom-Ireland, 12 min.) - A young man who has a severe stuttering problem is involved in an online romance with a kind and beautiful young woman in another part of the country. When the opportunity arises for the two of them to finally meet face to face, the young man is nearly paralyzed with fear over how his speech impediment will affect the possibility of the couple's flirtations turning into an actual love affair. This slight, but sweet and creative little film uses very little dialog to pack a surprising amount of character development and poignancy into its very short running time. "A-"
User Review - 8/10 by Arth Jan unflinching and fluent reply.. Stutterer 4 Out Of 5 Stutterer is a character driven short feature about a young boy that wishes to scream and be heard of. The emotions poured onto screen seem a splash of risk for it may land on either side of the coin but since the genuine reasoning isn't dependable on its justification, it comes off effective and impressive. The camera work is plausible, and is shot beautifully with an amazing cinematography and subtle background score that helps the viewers calculate the magnitude of the sequence. The characters can be one-dimensional in such short films considering the limited amount of time they are allotted but in here they are pragmatic and smarter to keep the audience invested in it. The primary reason why it works is how the makers have managed to pick up such a small piece of the puzzle and depict it with such higher stakes to communicate with the audience which works like a charm in here. Benjamin Cleary; the writer-director, has done an excellent work on executing such an explicit script that is fueled within its self-created morality conflicts. Matthew Needham is convincing in his portrayal and is amazing on conveying the message without any words. Stutterer is an unflinching and fluent reply to the society, unseen mythical force and oneself, as far as emotions are valued and concerned equally.
