In this inspired, genre-twisting new film, Oscar®-nominated writer/director Sarah Polley discovers that the truth depends on who's telling it. Polley is both filmmaker and detective as she investigates the secrets kept by a family of storytellers. She playfully interviews and interrogates a cast of characters of varying reliability, eliciting refreshingly candid, yet mostly contradictory, answers to the same questions. As each relates their version of the family mythology, present-day recollections shift into nostalgia-tinged glimpses of their mother, who departed too soon, leaving a trail of unanswered questions. Polley unravels the paradoxes to reveal the essence of family: always complicated, warmly messy and fiercely loving. Stories We Tell explores the elusive nature of truth and memory, but at its core is a deeply personal film about how our narratives shape and define us as individuals and families, all interconnecting to paint a profound, funny and poignant picture of the larger human story.

Movie Reviews

Quickflix - 10/10 by Simon MiraudoThis is simply a gorgeously realised and warmly compiled family album, which lingers with us not because its subjects are so unusual and alien, but because they feel so close to home. What a success.
Washington Post - 10/10 by Ann HornadayWith its ingenious structure, seamless visual conceits and mordant humor, Stories We Tell is a masterful film on technical and aesthetic values alone. But because of the wisdom and compassion of its maker, it rises to another level entirely.
Scene-Stealers.com - 10/10 by Abby OlceseThe film is, ultimately, a touching portrait of family, memory and shared history that keeps its audience hooked from the first moment, and doesn't let up until the final frame.
Sacramento News & Review - 10/10 by Jonathan KieferIt's the best and most generous creative thing Polley's ever done, not least because she's the only person in the world who could have done it.
Combustible Celluloid - 10/10 by Jeffrey M. AndersonWhat I can say is that the movie is dramatically compelling, journalistically fascinating, cinematically profound, and intellectually challenging.
Scotsman - 10/10 by Siobhan SynnotHonestly, it's one of the best things you'll see this year.
Chicago Sun-Times - 10/10 by Sheila O'MalleyA powerful and thoughtful film, it is also not what it at first seems, which is part of the point Polley appears to be interested in making. Can the truth ever actually be known about anything?
Canada.com - 10/10 by Katherine MonkSarah Polley doesn't just understand this slippery sense of personal truth, she opens a throbbing vein of her own history in the stunning new documentary Stories We Tell.
National Post - 10/10 by Chris KnightOne of the many amazing things about this personal documentary by Toronto actor and filmmaker Sarah Polley is how horribly wrong it could have gone -- but didn't.
TV Guide - 10/10 by Perry SeibertWith Away From Her and Take This Waltz, actress Sarah Polley became one of the freshest directorial voices of her generation. Stories We Tell doesn't just solidify this assertion, it makes you reappraise how personal those first two films are for her.
