Full Plot Details

Seventeen years after she was abducted by a stranger named Benjamin McKay (Jason Isaacs), twenty-three-year-old Leanne Dargon (Saoirse Ronan), who has been in his captivity all this time, is discovered, and eventually reunited with her biological parents, Marcy (Cynthia Nixon) and Glen Dargon (David Warshofsky), while Ben is now in prison charged with her kidnapping. Ben was able to hide her locked in his basement all of this time, telling her that he saved her from world destruction, which she would have no reason not to believe. Leanne has no true recollection of her time before Ben, who renamed her "Leia", and thus is the only family she has ever known. Over those seventeen years, Marcy and Glen dealt with the abduction in different ways, Marcy, whose primary focus was and still is Leanne, to the point of never having returned to work. Marcy, Glen, and Leia enter into their reunion with this history. So while Marcy and Glen have a memory of their six-year-old daughter who they want back in a young adult form, Leia only sees in front of her two strangers. Their parent/offspring relationship is thus formal and strained at best. But it takes a turn when Marcy discovers just how much of an attachment Leia still has to Ben, who Marcy only sees as the man who destroyed their family. Marcy goes to extreme measures to get back the "Leanne" she so desperately wants, at the possible expense of everything else in her life.

Movie Reviews

GeekNation - 7/10 by Eric D. SniderSincere but convoluted... The almost-campy plot mechanisms make it hard to take it very seriously.
HitFix - 6/10 by Gregory EllwoodThe director originally conceived of "Stockholm" as a theater piece. Her original instinct may have better served the material.
The Playlist - 6/10 by Rodrigo PerezThe tone-deaf misjudgment of the film's second half is catastrophic; a bafflingly ill-advised blunder that "Stockholm, Pennsylvania" can never recover from.
The Film Stage - 6/10 by Dan MeccaA provocative subject deserves a provocative platform. And while Stockholm, Pennsylvania is certainly provocative, it could stand to be a bit smarter.
Hollywood Reporter - 6/10 by David RooneyStrong performances from Saoirse Ronan and Cynthia Nixon keep Stockholm, Pennsylvania intense and absorbing, but Nicole Beckwith's initial impulse to tell her confinement story as a stage play feels as if it might have been a sounder choice.
Examiner.com - 5/10 by Travis HopsonThe film devolves into ugly, useless histrionics that are more laughable than meaningful.
We Got This Covered - 4/10 by Dominic MillHalf of a good film and half of not a very good film, Stockholm, Pennsylvania's mid-runtime fall from grace almost needs to be seen to be believed.
User Review - 6/10 by Erin CI thought I was going to enjoy this a lot more than I did. I felt it was a little long and very drab.
User Review - 6/10 by Moya WStockholm, Pennsylvania is the story about a twenty-two year old girl who was kidnapped at the age of four, now eighteen years later she is back with her biological family. The family that she can't remember and she is having a hard time fitting in. Movies about abduction and the Stockholmsyndrome can all be very different and they can all lead you in very different directions. You can end up sympathising with the family who just got their child back after having been away from each other for almost twenty years. Or you can end up sympathising with the child, all she knows is what she's been living with for these past eighteen years, she can't remember anything else and any type of change in her life is going to be difficult. Or you can end up sympathising with the abductor, maybe he couldn't have children of his own or maybe he was very lonely. In this movie I felt that I sympathised with her - Leia - played by Saoirse Ronan. I could understand why she had a hard time fitting in, because everyone around her was trying too hard. I could understand why she had a connection with Ben. I could understand why she felt the way she did. I had a hard time understanding the parents, they were manipulative and I didn't really understand why they were the way they were. It was difficult to sit through the movie, you never really got into it the way that you had hoped. Although it was a good storyline and it was a story that needed to be told. Saoirse Ronan is one of the best actresses of her generation and this movie wasn't an exception.
