Movie Reviews

The Associated Press - 9/10 by Lee MitgangMr. Olmos seems to be living and breathing this role rather than merely playing it, and his enthusiasm really catches on.
Washington Post - 9/10 by Rita KempleyStand and Deliver is inspirational, but never sentimental. It resists all too many temptations. It cries out for schmaltz. But this is a drama as honest as its hero, a work that comes from the heart -- the heart of a computer programmer.
Los Angeles Times - 9/10 by Sheila BensonStand and Deliver itself, with its message of the soaring rewards of learning, aims high and delivers perhaps a B+. But it's already a better, less cliched film than La Bamba, with considerably more on its mind, and its strengths may pave the way for more complex, more demanding stories of the Latino experience for all audiences.
MetroActive - 8/10 by Richard von Busack"The greatest John G. Avildsen movie John G. Avidlsen never made. Olmos is far more understated than the average tough-teacher is in this kind of film."
EmanuelLevy.Com - 8/10 by Emanuel LevyAs the tough math teacher, Olmos delivers a strong, Oscar-nominated performance in this rather simple but uplifting melodrama.
Tampa Bay Times - 8/10 by Hal LipperCarefully scripted and well acted, Stand and Deliver is sentimental and utterly predictable but better than many films of this kind.
Miami Herald - 8/10 by Bill CosfordLike a series pilot, Stand and Deliver has a strong character, a promising situation and not a lot of story-it seems to be setting things up for future episodes.
The Globe and Mail (Toronto) - 8/10 by Jay ScottThere were moments in Stand and Deliver that moved me very deeply and other moments so artificial and contrived that I wanted to edit them out, right then and there. The result is a film that makes a brave, bold statement about an unexpected subject, but that lacks the full emotional power it really should have.
Common Sense Media - 8/10 by Ellen MacKayIntensely watchable movie based on a true story.
User Review - 10/10 by Michael SSometimes I think we confuse the quality of a movie with the quality of the story it tells; I know I'm as guilty as the next person of that. I bring this up because the story of Jaime Escalante and his first class of Calculus students is so darn amazing that I don't think I end up paying attention to the movie itself. I tried to on this viewing and, while the story is excellent and the acting enjoyable enough to make a large ensemble cast memorable, I think that the movie is too short. 104 minutes is not enough time to really convey all the hard work that was put in by both Escalante and his students. While the scenes chosen were purposeful and powerful, there weren't enough images of the students sitting down and staring at Calculus, reminding viewers that these kids and their teacher really did get up early each day, really did study all day on Saturdays, and really did go from a rough first-step math class to passing the AB Calculus test TWICE EACH. Absolutely fantastic story that makes for an enjoyable, but overly brief story.
