In a dilapidated rural mansion, the last generation of the degenerate, inbred Merrye family lives with the inherited curse of a disease that causes them to mentally regress from the age of 10 or so on as they physically develop. The family chauffeur looks out for them and covers up their indiscretions. Trouble comes when greedy distant relatives and their lawyer arrive to dispossess the family of its home.... Creepy and disturbing, while still able to maintain a dark comedic element, I rated this so high because very rarely am I impressed this much by a horror from this era. Maybe this is a start. |

SPIDER BABY is the ancestor of every family of crazies horror film, from THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and THE HILLS HAVE EYES to HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES and FRONTIER(S). Excellent performances all around, esp. the always underrated Lon Chaney Jr., and a young Sid Haig. |

| User ReviewJerome BA deliciously unnerving horror classic that set the standard for the grand guinol family melodramas. One of Lon Chaney Jr.'s most memorable performances, as well as the role that gained Sid Haig (most known for his iconic performance as Captain Spaulding in Devil's Rejects) instant notoriety. Jill Banner, after whom the film is named, is also positively hypnotizing. (On an intriguing side note, she had a rather infamous love affair with Marlin Brando before her untimely demise) |
