Entertainment WeeklyLisa SchwarzbaumIt's a complete lack of story that explains why this expensive production from the proficient creator of Speed and Twister sputters out on the high seas.
Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertMovies like this embrace goofiness with an almost sensual pleasure.
Film ScoutsLeslie RigoulotThis time I found myself contemplating how far into a bay a huge cruise ship could actually go before it ran aground in the sand, instead of watching De Bont's plot unfold.
Juicy CerebellumAlex SandellLiterally has to be the worst 'event' film ever made.
Chicago TribuneGene SiskelSpeed 2 is the most exciting to date of this summer's big action pictures.
Time OutNick BradshawDafoe's take on Dennis Hopper's Hopper impersonation is plain pointless; Bullock too is wasted in a ditzy half-role; and Patric is unsmiling and resolutely uncharismatic.
Urban CinefileUrban Cinefile CriticsEven technically, the film has problems: unforgivable, given its massive budget.
New York Daily NewsJami BernardAn ear-splitting amusement-park attraction posing as a movie.
Spokesman-Review (Washington)Dan WebsterDe Bont's annoyingly jerky camera seldom stays still, the personable and appealing Bullock is given virtually nothing to do, [and] the plot twists range from the incredible to the absurd.
Philadelphia InquirerDesmond RyanDe Bont remains an expert director of action, but putting the reference to cruise control in the title serves as fair warning of an unengaged filmmaker on automatic pilot.
