Features new performances of the freedom songs by top artists; archival footage; and interviews with civil rights foot soldiers and leaders. Freedom songs evolved from slave chants, from the labor movement, and especially from the black church. Music enabled blacks to sing words they could not say, and it was crucial in helping the protesters as they faced down brutal aggression with dignity and non-violence. The infectious energy of the songs swept people up and empowered them to fight for their rights. This film celebrates the vitality of this music.

Movie Reviews

New York Times - 9/10 by Mike HaleIt’s the kind of film that will have audiences clapping and singing along. And why not? The images and stories may be familiar, but it’s history worth retelling.
Seattle Times - 8/10 by Tom KeoghSoundtrack may very well be the finest, broad history on film of the Southern Freedom Movement years as measured from the Montgomery bus boycott (beginning in 1955) to the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1968).
Jam! Movies - 8/10 by Liz BraunOn a practical level, the music is a helpful entry point into some of the most shameful chapters in American history.
Boston Herald - 8/10 by James VerniereWhether you lived through the civil rights movement or not, the Danny Glover-produced, marvelously musical "Soundtrack for a Revolution" will leave you deeply moved and humming.
Boston Phoenix - 8/10 by Peter KeoughThe songs are rousing, but it takes more than a soundtrack to make a revolution.
Washington Post - 8/10 by Ann HornadayThrough vivid archival material and voice-overs, the filmmakers create moving vignettes that, taken together, form a fascinating primer on nonviolence as a political force and discipline.
Boston Globe - 6/10 by Mark FeeneyThe music is the occasion, and it’s stirring. What linger, though, are the images — and the ideals and emotions they convey.
ReelTalk Movie Reviews - 6/10 by Donald J. LevitIt's the clips of early television broadcast reportage -- along with the emotional memories of those who participated, that still move one to tears, awe and pride.
New York Post - 4/10 by Kyle SmithThe film is primarily interested in the music that accompanied this turmoil, which is a bit like covering the American Revolution with the focus on the wigs Washington and Jefferson wore.
User Review - 10/10 by Bruno LAmazingly sad/beautiful movie. Exceptionally well done. It was really good the way which it portrays the story about the civil rights movement. The musicians chosen to perform the songs were very well selected. It was impressive to see/hear the emotions from all the musicians.
