Movie Reviews

Hollywood Reporter - 10/10 by Justin LoweAn insightful film about the creative talents that have made hip-hop an original, enduring American musical tradition.
Trespass - 10/10 by Glenn DunksDespite its relative shortcomings, the film is a must see for anybody like me who worships the golden era of hip-hop where the artists actually had something to say
Empire Magazine - 8/10 by David HughesAn extremely interesting insight, proving that rap music is an art form in its own right.
Observer (UK) - 8/10 by Philip FrenchWhat they don't talk about, on Ice-T's specific instructions, are the moral, social and psychological aspects of the art, and there's little on how rap relates to other forms of black music such as jazz, gospel or the blues.
San Francisco Chronicle - 8/10 by Chris VognarThe Art of Rap was made by a hip-hop fiend for hip-hop fiends. I fit the description, and it's difficult for me to approach the film as an outsider. But if novices can make it through the barrage of interviews with artists they don't know, they'll learn plenty about a craft still grossly misrepresented by the mass media.
Financial Times - 8/10 by Nigel AndrewsThe film is educative, entertaining, in almost all senses a blast. Your body is left in your seat while your soul is blown to the back of the auditorium.
DVDTalk.com - 8/10 by Jason BaileyThe film never accumulates into a cohesive documentary whole--it's like watching 106 minutes of 'Yo! MTV Raps' segments, back to back to back.
Guardian - 8/10 by Peter BradshawWith a very simple premise, rapper Ice-T – this film's presenter and co-director with Andy Baybutt – has created a very enjoyable and often fascinating movie.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch - 8/10 by Kevin C. JohnsonIce-T delivers a love letter to hip-hop with Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap.
Village Voice - 8/10 by Michelle OrangeRap confirms the art of the form from the inside. Only time can sort out the rest.
