Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)Ken HankeCan anyone explain the appeal of this to me?
Chicago ReaderJonathan RosenbaumA profoundly sexist and eminently hummable 1954 CinemaScope musical—supposedly set in the great outdoors, but mainly filmed on soundstages—with some terrific athletic Michael Kidd choreography and some better-than-average direction by Stanley Donen.
Filmcritic.comPete Croattoone of the greatest musicals, if not movies, of all time
EmpireEmma CochraneGreat songs, great set pieces and solid performances in this colourful and infectiously enjoyable musical.
The SpectatorVirginia GrahamGood tunes, humour, imaginative presentation and abounding vitality are welded together to make this film the most Memorable Musical of 1954.
CinePassionFernando F. CroceDonen's manipulation of spinning torsos and piston-pumping knees across Cinemascope sprawls is inventive everywhere
New York TimesA.H. WeilerA fast, funny and sprightly rustic romp well worth seeing.
Not Coming to a Theater Near YouMatt BaileyThe songs are knowingly corny and catchy as hell, the dancing is (quite rightly) renowned, the story is ludicrously sexist, and the whole film is just exceedingly watchable.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyWritten directly for ther screen, MGM's popular musical benefits immensely from Stanley Donen's deft direction, Michael Kidd's dynamic choreography, and Adolph Deutsch and Saul Chaplin's Oscar-winning score.
User ReviewLorraine SI love this film soooooooo much, there is nothing about it that I dont love. And the fact there are 7 red headed men to look at is the best bit! Fav scene has to be the dance at the barn raising. As musicals go - this one is perfection!
