Creative LoafingMatt BrunsonA film noir so potent for its time that it was banned in Atlanta, Milwaukee and the entire state of New York.
Classic Film and TelevisionMichael E. GrostPowerful film noir, of a poor clerk lured into a tragic love story.
User ReviewAndrey BFull of emotions and deep study of human's relationships, especially their most meanest brinks. And, of course, with direction of great Lang.
User ReviewZoran SOne of the greatest of all American films. As bleak and nihilistic as any Noir.
User ReviewChris BA great movie. Duryea and Robinson are amazing. Stays true to its dark promise.
User ReviewKJ PNever have I encountered a film that involves a painter, where I actually cared so much about what happened to him. I felt terrible every time he was lured into another trap. This film revolves around the life of a cashier as he paints for fun on the side. His dream is to eventually sell his paintings, but can never find anyone to purchase them. As this married man becomes emotionally involved in another woman, she lies in order to steal the paintings to sell for herself. He finds out and actually thanks her. He falls into every trap known to man, and in the end, you will truly feel sympathy for his actions. This beautiful "film noir" definitely deserves a ranking among the top of it's kind. With great acting, truly emotional storytelling, amazing transitions and shots, "Scarlet Street" (although very slow moving and dated) is a brilliant example of the classical paradigm. I absolutely loved this film!
Imprescindible!
User ReviewJohn EEvery now and then a movie comes along so good that it kicks you right in the ass. Scarlet Street is such a film! A terrific psychological noir from 45', courtesy of legendary director, Fritz Lang (M, Metropolis, Big Heat) that takes place in the bohemian heart of Greenwich Village. Joan Bennett is the femme fatale and Edward G. Robinson her gullible mark- a meek and middle-aged loner with artistic aspirations. With a multilayered storyline and plenty of clever plot twists, it's easy to see that Lang was basically the Chris Nolan of his time. It's a film that is satisfying to both the eyes and the mind, exploring such things as middle age, love, art, sex, guilt and identity. I don't give too many 5/5 ratings, but this one fully earned it. A masterpiece!
