Few lives in our time are as dramatic and enigmatic as the saga of Sanjay Dutt. Coming from a family of cinema legends, he himself became a film star, then saw dizzying heights and darkest depths: adulation of die-hard fans, unending battles with various addictions, brushes with the underworld, prison terms, loss of loved ones, and the haunting speculation that he might be a terrorist. Sanju is in turns a hilarious and heartbreaking exploration of one man's battle against his own wild self and the formidable external forces trying to crush him. It depicts the journey of a man through everything that life can throw at him. Some true stories leave you thinking "did this really happen?" This is one such unbelievable story that happens to be true.

indieWireAnisha JhaveriSanju is a reminder that putting a subject on a pedestal isn’t a biopic’s only potential pitfall. Here, it becomes problematic by portraying Sanjay as a victim of his circumstances rather than the master of his own decisions.
The Times of IndiaRachit GuptaRanbir Kapoor is just as good as his reputation. To state that he's an incredible actor who fills Sanjay Dutt's role with gravitas and spunk is stating the obvious.
ReutersShilpa JamkhandikarSanju is not a particularly engaging film because it stretches too long and resorts to melodrama over substance, but Bollywood also lost the opportunity to look at one of its own with a neutral lens and tell his story honestly.
Hollywood ReporterLisa TseringA glorified infomercial about the life of a Bollywood bad boy.
Scroll.inNandini RamnathThe women in Sanju are as ornamental as their predecessors in Hirani's films...In its relentless quest to offer absolution, Sanju is no better or worse than many other biopics that have flooded Bollywood over the past few years.
GuardianMike McCahillA decidedly soft and authorised-looking biopic.
User Reviewranjan04rajeevfor those people who are aware of Bollywood style, it is a movie Bollywood masterpiece, like all the other Rajkumar Hirani films this movie is solid in itself with great acting and plot. but above all the director has grown up to the challenge of trying a Hollywood style of drug abuse sequence, Trainspotting and Requiem for a dream has always be considered as classic way of showing that, which lacked in Udta Punjab, but here Raju utilising his masterful class and style gives a very unique perspective on how feeling high could feel, but doesn't romanticises on it, in the spirally 1st half movie gives the thrill and pleasure of dark world. 2nd half is much more classic Raju style film, with lots of tribute given to Ustads of Bollywood, and how can a true film lover views the wold through songs and gets his strength and motivation through them. It is also a tribute to a good man Sunil Dutt who never lost hope in his son. But above all this movie is not just an ordinary dramatised biopic but also comments on the state of India, where sensational news and communal violence are largely prevalent. Movie is very good, you need not be a Sanju Baba fan to enjoy it.
