Kenji, abandoned by his mother, scrapes out a meager existence doing odd jobs including driving bar hostesses and their customers home. Besides this he takes care of the sister of an old friend in jail and a young illegal immigrant. But his life reaches a turning point when he happens to meet Chiyoko, his long lost mother. She is now married to Mamiya, the owner of an express package delivery service. They also have a teenage son, Yusuke. Subdued feelings of alarm, discomfort and resentment between Chiyoko, Kenji, and his half brother Yusuke hide underneath and are seemingly caused by the inseparable blood ties that seem to wield control over everyone's destiny. Is blood that powerful? What exactly defines a mother or a father? While Kenji struggles with these questions and attempts to escape his fate, Chiyoko seems content to let these issues unfold and find a solution. Where will it ultimately lead them?
Leave your thoughts about Sad Vacation.
User ReviewPrivate Uenjoyable sotry-telling, as each three of Aoyama's latest fims shot thgrough "Helpless", "Eureaka" and "Sad vacation" are tagged. Slow but surely entertaining myslef into his own camera cutting.
User ReviewBen HBeautifully uncanny cinematic experience, something of a sequel to Helpless, this is a film you can fall into, with characteristically flawless performance from Asano.
User ReviewYvonne SNice, but I felt a bit too long in some scenes. A boy speaks Cantonese but he was definately japanese. It did not made a big difference for entire story but I did not get into the movie...i guess it's because I saw this movie in Hong Kong....
User ReviewDaniel TA good natured man attempts to take revenge on his mother who abandoned him a long time ago. Turns out she's Lady Macbeth reincarnated. Quirky, funny and entertaining.
User ReviewJeff Lheavy, upsad, with good actors and actresses
User ReviewMijin YThis film is about unlimited forgiveness, not for family nor relationship, any other feelings. Tadanobu Asano is brilliant but Joe Odagiri's act is still a jumble in its character. --Mar 2008
User ReviewAda Ca weird one....very Tadanobu Asano kind of movie...
User ReviewAyumi Hi dont reli get the message behind the movie and its kinda slow.. =.= plus i dont understand why Joe Odagiri is called the main character in the poster, while he appeared so less T.T
User Reviewm wyou know i was going to give this movie 4 stars. and then that fuckin' bubble popped. watch the movie you'll know what I mean.
User ReviewEugene KEureka is nearly-great, and this isn't even close. The ending is equivalent to being spat in the face. Avoid at all costs. Extremely disappointing.
