User ReviewChristopher BHilarrious and fast moving, McDowell is brilliant in this incredibly well done film.
User ReviewOrlok WMalcom McDowell and Olver Reed, now theres a comedic duo. Really enjoyed this comedy from 1975. A little surprised more people havent seen in it, given the quality. Has a fairly complex plot, but keeps the laughs in regular supply. Several bad ass sword fighting scenes. Malcolm McDowell is really funny throughout. Alan Bates also definently has his moments. Florinda Bolkan is hot. All in all a really good time. More people need to see this one.
User ReviewMarcus WThis film is one of the funniest I have ever seen. I love the fight scenes. The comedy is just great where it is. Malcolm emboddies his character of Flashman to the very ends. He is perfect in this. the rest of the cast are really fun as well. Also nice to see cameos of two of my other favourite actors Alastair Sim and Bob Hoskins (in their respectivley last and first film).
User ReviewDoctor SWhat a freaking great movie. Malcolm is awesome as always. I laughed my head off. To bad a lot of people don't know about this movie. its a shame because it is one of the best.
User ReviewMax MThe second of author George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman novels (out of a series of twelve) is brought brilliantly and hilariously to life by director Richard Lester (A Hard Day's Night, Petulia, Superman II). Col. Harry Flashman (perfectly played by Malcom MacDowell) is the ultimate anti-hero, being a liar, cheat, a womanizer and an enormous coward, but still manages to land himself into perilous and ultimately history-making adventures and emerge a seeming hero. What makes the books and this film so much fun are the mixing of historical fact with fiction. Here Flashman crosses paths with such historical figures as Lola Montes and Otto Von Bismark, all the while getting into sword fights, near-death scrapes, and an attempted political coup (the story mirrors Anthony Hope's The Prisoner of Zenda, a fact which is brought up in the book with a wink and a nudge). Author Fraser (who wrote the scripts for director Lester's Three Musketeers and Four Musketeers films) also wrote the terrific script.
User ReviewTyler BDry British humor, plus an amazing British case including Malcolm McDowell and Oliver Reed.
User ReviewKeith TThis is a great fun movie, which for some reason is only available on DVD in NTSC Region 1, despite practically everyone involved in it being a Brit (except Dick Lester, the director). George McDonald Fraser's book of Royal Flash owes a lot to Anthony Hope's The Prisoner of Zenda, and it is entertaining to compare this film with the various PoZ films and remakes. GMcDF also wrote the film's screenplay. Malcolm McDowell makes a fine Harry Flashman, Oliver Reed is deliciously evil as Otto von Bismark, while Alan Bates gets the showy part of Rudi von Sternberg, a character very definitely based on Hope's Rupert of Hentzau. The film also has Britt Ekland, Henry Cooper and early bit-part appearances of David Jason and Bob Hoskins. The film plays up the slapstick element of George McDonald Fraser's Flashman tale perhaps a bit too much, but that's the typical Dick Lester way and his Musketeers (and Beatles!) series are just the same. It's a shame this film isn't hown on UK TV more or available in PAL Region 2 DVD. Indeed, it seems to be SO obscure that it was even missing from the Flixster data base until I reported its absence!
User ReviewSean CA fun romp of diplomatic intrigue, hilarious situations, and some good ole swashbuckling.
