Leave your thoughts about Rock & Rule.
Filmcritic.comKeith BreeseRock & Rule is a masterpiece of outré animation and wildly ambitious vision and remains a triumph in animated feature film.
Cinema CrazedFelix Vasquez Jr.An oddity of an adult animated film, but it's one that every self respecting animation fan should watch at least once.
User ReviewMelanie Dmy favourite cartoon for adults is the greatly under-rated Rock & Rule. Another post-apocalyptic film, this one sees humans extinct, but the animals have mutated into human-like beings. So think Goofy and Mickey Mouse, just... sexy :-p . It's a musical extravaganza that has an aging rock star kidnap a beautiful young singer when he finds out that her voice is the key to opening a portal and releasing malevolent demons. The music is great, too, performed by some of rock's greatest bands: Blondie's Deborah Harry, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Earth Wind and Fire, and Cheap Trick. If you haven't seen it yet, I reccomend it very much! 10/10
User ReviewRachel WOne of the best early animated movies for adults only. I'm esp proud that it is Canadian (go Nelvana!). When I first saw the movie, Mok reminded me Mick Jagger with the flamboyant costumes, moves and exaggerated sense of grandeur, both on and off the stage. Love the movie, want to get a copy to show my 16 yr old daughter (maybe it will get her off that Twilight binge she's been on!! LOL)
User ReviewTA2OOEDMANA truly underrated little gem of a film; and a brilliantly done piece of traditional animation that has been forgotten and overlooked for far too long. The film was definitely a head of it's time for what it attempted to do in feature length animation, but thanks to Unearthed Films brilliant DVD release, I think it's worth for any fan of animated films to check out. The animation is amazing for it's time, looking very solid and fluid throughout and some of the unique special effects created for the film are just fascinating. The characters are a lot of fun, especially Mok, a grand spoof on glam rockers and Mic Jagger; plus the songs provided for him by Lou Reed are a lot of fun. The movie's story and a plot are definitely a bit shaky at times, and the unique world of the movie would have been better with some more exposition, but what we have is one hell of a fun ride that's worth checking out. Highly recomended!
User ReviewPrivate USpent years waiting for this to come out on DVD. I was not dissapointed when i finally got my copy!
User ReviewKatie MF-ing awesome... yep. Just wish there was a soundtrack available... I would listen to it at work. You betcha
User ReviewTroy CThis is a pretty wicked movie, especially Lou Reed's bit. However, the main reason you should pick this up on DVD is for the 2nd disc. The 2 disc version is the only place you can get The Devil & Daniel Mouse on DVD (unless you try to burn your own from an old tape). Now THAT'S what I'm talking about. Nelvana's finest hour. The speech track in Bauhaus' Party of the First Part is taken from this film... in case you're not familiar with it.
User ReviewEric SA triumph of classic cel animation. Rock and roll fantasy at it's finest. Deserves at least one watch.
User ReviewJohn RSadly, this film was released the same year as Heavy Metal. R&R did not have the established fan base at the time, and consequently bombed in the box office. This movie is FAR superior with deeply involved plot, excellect characters and animation, and awesome music by the greats of the day. Truly something for Canada to be proud of, even if it barely got the recognition it truly deserves.
