Movie Reviews

IndieWire - 8/10 by David EhrlichIt’s a shaggy and distended portrait of friendship that pinballs through time as freely as it does between genres, and a few too many of the 140-minute story’s frequent detours wind up in dead ends, but Ride or Die retains enough forward momentum to roll across even its least successful chapters because of how stubbornly Hiroki refuses to keep score between these characters.
Polygon - 7/10 by Deirdre CrimminsRide or Die strikes some strange tones, and features some questionable motives. But that just supports the world Rei and Nanae have crafted for themselves. It’s messy and imperfect, and in that way, it feels unnervingly real.
The Guardian - 6/10 by Phuong LeRide or Die is well-made and engrossing, despite its occasionally meandering pace.
Variety - 6/10 by Maggie LeeAlthough the journey feels rather drawn out in the film’s 142-minute running time, and is strewn with one ear-splitting brawl too many, the mystery of each protagonist’s true intentions, and the unpredictability of their course of action, keep tensions on a continuous simmer.
The New York Times - 5/10 by Natalia WinkelmanThe movie gracefully captures the rhythms of intimacy, how it deepens quicker in stolen time. But even as they develop a kinship, the women themselves remain ciphers.
User Review - 10/10 by Pearl20This is a must watch movie. Both lead actress give all of their best for their role.
User Review - 10/10 by JulioacostWhat a great film! The storyline was insanely unpredictable. Kudos to the main characters who executes their role in the most astounding way.
User Review - 8/10 by CobaltuXWell, the movie is not bad,but it can be better. It is somewhat long but leaving all that aside, it covers several topics, such as toxic relationships, the LGBT + community and obsession.
User Review - 7/10 by LeonKenI like the emotional Rei, the complicated love story between her and her girlfriend from the past. I like what she ready to do anything for love. The plot moves very slowly, but its intriguing and you really care about the characters. I dont like ending of the movie, i think it could end with a situation where they hide in the unknown what will happen next. And also the plot of history looks illogical, they could just steal some money from this man and run away instead of killing him.
User Review - 6/10 by JLuis_001Ride or Die is basically an erotic drama / thriller. A kind of Thelma & Louise, where the romance - if I can call it that way - is completely explored, and is very raw, primal and initially violent. Like the other film I just saw today, Ride or Die is also based on a manga. A completely adult manga from what I understand, and if you watch the movie you will know what I mean. Although the beginning of the story doesn't really address explanations about the violent event that ends up being the catalyst for this story, it's fair to admit that when this is revealed, one cannot help but think how it was that what initially only seemed like an implicit act, caused another person to decided to shed blood for her lover, and at the same risk everything for it. What follows doesn't justify the excessive length, because while it's attractive to try to discover where the thing is heading while tensions simmer, the script doesn't fill in the gaps with scenes that provide something truly substantial, but despite the drops in the pace, this in my opinion never became harmful. However, it's still necessary to mention that it was necessary to know where to cut. The ending, like all the journey, unequivocally provokes wondering if there was no other way for the protagonists, because the ending is harshly distressing for one, while the other apparently has accepted with resignation what follows. There is no catharsis, at least not as far as I can see, and of course there's no happy ending, but perhaps the conclusion is not rooted on trying to get them one, nor is it accepting that irrationalities have been committed as an expression of love.
