Classic Film and Television - 6/10 by Michael E. GrostRichly styled Western with some of the most sympathetic characters in Budd Boetticher.
n+1 - 6/10 by A.S. HamrahNothing is wasted in the stripped-down clarity of Ride Lonesome's eighty minutes. This is the apotheosis of the classical western.
User Review - 10/10 by Ben SOnly slightly less wonderful than the Scott-Boetticher masterpieces "The Tall T" and "Seven Men From Now," this one has many of the elements that make those films great. And it has a standout cast, including Lee Van Cleef, Pernell Roberts, James Best, and James Coburn in his movie debut.
User Review - 10/10 by Jim MMy favourite Western of all time. A cracking script, tension, a neat twist, great performances - particularly from Pernell Roberts - and the beautiful rugged landscape of Lone Pine. The final scenes give it one of the most satisfying endings of any Western. The best Boetticher-Scott collaboration, which is saying something when you consider Seven Men From Now, The Tall T and Comanche Station.
User Review - 10/10 by Zoran SOne of the most precisely framed films you will. A visual masterpiece in other words. It also has one of the greatest final shots of all time.
User Review - 10/10 by Dave JFriday, February 5, 2010 (1959) Ride Lonesome Because the first time I had watched this film, I was completely oblivious of what the plot was going to be (except that I was in the mood to watch a Western), the only thing I'm going to say is that it's a ADULT WESTERN with a dab of mystery and suspense!!!! Of what I mean by ADULT is because it takes a little intelligence to go through the plot, since this film offers hardly any physical or actual action but alot of tension and bonding. This is not your typical John Wayne Western where physical gunfights are always expcted to happen!! This is a very well made subtle Western with easy going tension and mystery which soon reveals itself about questionable actions by Ben Brigade played by Randolph Scott. It is also number six of seven Westerns Randolph Scott did with director Budd Boetticher. The others include starting with "Seven Men From Now", "The Tall T", "Decision at Sundown", "Buchanan Rides Alone", "Westbound" and "Comanche Station". Also starring Pernell Roberts first solid movie gig before going in to star in the hit show Bonanza. As well it is also James Coburn's first starring film role as Whit!!! 4/4
User Review - 10/10 by Walter MMy favourite of the Boetticher/Scott westerns.
User Review - 10/10 by Erik GThe third of the Boetticher-Scott Westerns I've seen and the best. This was on TCM the other day, but I hope to see it on the big screen someday since there are so many exquisitely framed shots in this movie that use every bit of the depth of the field. There's one shot where James Coburn goes up on the ridge to get a lookout for the bad guys and when they come, they are a mere wisp of dust, miles away and framed by two trees.
User Review - 8/10 by David SGood direction and story make this a great underrated western. Good performances, and usage of past events. It manages to balance character development and action for a satisfying movie.
User Review - 8/10 by F Clark WSpare dialogue, taciturn protagonist, one dimensional dame, wide open spaces in the great "empty." Fully engaging.
