Movie Reviews

Washington Post - 8/10 by Stephanie MerryAt slightly longer than an hour, the movie comes and goes before you know it, but some of its scenes, both funny and achingly sad, won't disappear so quickly.
The New York Times - 8/10 by Jeannette CatsoulisThe film is a riveting portrait of young men in shock and in mourning as the tragedy stirs feelings that have long lain dormant.
The Hollywood Reporter - 7/10 by John DeForeRedlegs marks the promising directorial debut of film critic Brandon Harris.
Variety - 5/10 by Dennis HarveyFilmmaker magazine editor/critic Brandon Harris' debut feature, Redlegs, puts its indebtedness to Cassavetes upfront -- or rather, in back, spelled out clearly amid the closing acknowledgements -- as three protagonists act out a junior version of "Husbands'" epic drunken wake.
Village Voice - 4/10 by Nick SchagerThe trio's mourning feels more like immature self-absorption.
Slant Magazine - 3/10 by Calum MarshRedlegs may be "raw," but it's meaningless. That's something Cassavetes would have never abided.
User Review - 9/10 by Ben_GravesThis movie impressed me so much. It's some of the best acting I've seen, period, the score and cinematography are haunting, and it captures the heart of Cincinatti, one of the most fascinating, and under explored cities in the world, a place where race and class differences are never far from the surface of life. Many see the Cassavettes influence, and some have derided the film for it, but unlike many movies that rip off, Harris is clearly paying homage to him. Evan Louison is perhaps the films great highlight, as is Miranda Rhyne's remarkable cinematography. Redlegs is not a simple film with a simple, didactic message. It bravely broaches the subject of race and doesn't distill anything for the audience. I highly recommend it.
