RED WITHOUT BLUE is an artistic and groundbreaking examination of gender, identity, and the unswerving bond of twinship despite transformation. An honest portrayal of a family in turmoil, RWB follows a pair of identical twins as one transitions from male to female. Captured over a period of three years, the film documents the twins and their parents, examining the Farleys' struggle to redefine their family. The twins' early lives were quintessentially all-American: picture-perfect holidays, supportive parents who cheered them on every step of the way. By the time they were 14, their parents had divorced, they had come out as gay, and a joint suicide attempt precipitated a forced separation of Mark and Alex for two and half years. Through candid and extensive interviews with the twins and their family, RED WITHOUT BLUE recounts these troubled times, interweaving the twins' difficult past with their efforts to find themselves in the present. The film follows the painful steps of Clair's transition, including electrolysis and the difficult decision to proceed with bottom surgery. Through its portrayal of these articulate and independent twins, each haunted by the painful experiences of their adolescence, the film questions normative standards of gender and identity - as Mark and Clair reassert their indescribable bond as identical twins. Through the power of the Farleys' voices, we hear the story of a family's redemption from a dark past, and ultimately, its revival to the present.

User Review - 10/10 by Lisa MProbably the best documentary on transgenders i have ever seen. It portraits the relationship of a young transgendered woman to her twin brother and her parents.
User Review - 10/10 by Roxanne RPowerful, poignant and moving true story of two beautiful identical twin brothers born in Montana (Alex and Mark). During the three years of filming the documentary the viewer watches as these men not only come to terms with their homosexuality but also the amazing transformation of one of them into a woman. We meet their parents who are the typical American family raising two adorable twin boys but as they became teenagers, they faced discrimination from classmates and teachers for being gay. As a viewer this breaks my heart because the photos of them as kids and teens were so beautiful...its like I wanted to love those boys so much and to protect them and let them know that the world is NOT an ugly place because some people in the world loves them for who they are! I am so glad that they are both alive and survived the perilous teenage years! Wish I knew Ladd's full name to see if I can find her in Facebook- she is one courageous woman for undergoing a similar transformation and may I say a good skeet shooter! Highly recommended documentary!!
User Review - 10/10 by Matt HThis film brilliantly shows so many people changing it such profound ways. It's so satisfying to see acceptance take hold of everyone involved. We all have so much to learn from this.
User Review - 10/10 by Miriam BA brilliant little film - starts by suggestion and ends by answering completely different questions. Very complex and revealing.
User Review - 10/10 by Julie AAmong the best documentaries I've ever seen. If you ever have a chance, don't miss it. It totally changed my understanding of transsexual issues.
User Review - 10/10 by Kenn WIncredible subject matter; shot in true documentary format, none of the biased Michel Moore gloss. True life as it unfolds.
User Review - 10/10 by Christopher BAmazing, to put it simply. A really fascinating look at one family, but more specifically twins, and one who is transgendered and takes us through the process from male to female. Emotional, uninhibited, and will easily tug at your heart strings and make you really care about this family.
User Review - 10/10 by Private UThe best thing I saw at Vinokino this year, this film had a lot to say, I feel, about families and our relationships with those whom we happen to grow up and older with.
