Movie Reviews

Common Sense Media - 8/10 by Tracy MooreThoughtful faith-driven film on Christian artist is intense.
User Review - 10/10 by Anonymous UserThis isn't your typical, one sided, cheesy Christian movie. This is a real hard look at the life of a man who many regard as one of Christian music's best song writers. He had a lot of struggles with loneliness, rejection and never feeling accepted by his father or even others around him. He drank a lot, smoked a lot, wasn't Mr. Holy like some like to view him. Yet, through that pain and struggle, he wrote some of the deepest, most sincere lyrics you can hear in any song. He always believed in God and knew Him as his savior, but never really had peace until late in his short life. It is a long movie, and yes, some parts drag, but overall, the acting is really good and Michael Koch is amazing; he sounds a lot like Rich Mullins when he sings. You get a non-glossy look at a messed up life that God used to make some beautiful art with. Definitely worth watching.
User Review - 10/10 by Thomas PWell written, compelling, and honest to a fault about the life and untimely death of Rich Mullins - musician and author of Christian classics "Awesome God" and Amy Grant's popular "Sing Your Praise To The Lord" who struggled w alcoholism and self acceptance. A sensitive man, broken by a harsh father, who wrestled w the meaning of true Christianity and the idea of a loving Father God. He later found some answers thru Brennan Manning, an author who helped Mullins find closure and peace, after his difficult father had passed away. A touching, heartfelt portrayal - worthy bc of its honesty, authenticity and urgently needed message. Brilliant and satisfying. 5 of 5
User Review - 10/10 by Yelsew ZLiked it very much. Rich Mullins' story is very powerful and is sure to inspire some aspiring artists to live the way he did, give almost all his profits to charity and the poor.
User Review - 10/10 by Scott CAs good and as honest as any Christian film I've ever seen! Mia and I absolutely loved it!
User Review - 10/10 by Nathan MI want to be perfect. I want to look perfect - like I have it altogether. The truth is that I am a beautiful, beloved mess. This movie reminds me of how painful and meaningful vulnerability can be - and how much courage and strength it takes to be honest about my brokenness. I walked away with an even deeper desire to become like this raw, real, broken saint.

User Review - 10/10 by Andy BRagamuffin is an inspiring movie without the usual Christian film cheesiness. The message is powerful, the acting is solid, and the cinematography is excellent for such a small budget film. This movie spoke to me deeply about my own struggles. Struggles with family wounds, struggles about how I view myself, and the challenge of believing that God not only accepts me as I am, He's crazy about me... The film takes us through some of the moments in the life of Christian musician and songwriter Rich Mullins who died in a tragic accident in 1997. Other people of note represented in the movie include late author and speaker Brennan Manning and singer Amy Grant, as well as appearances by singer Mitch McVicker and author and theologian James Bryan Smith. I give this two thumbs way up!
User Review - 10/10 by Diana MI have listened to Rich Mullins songs for years but never knew his story till I watched this movie. This is a awesome movie of his life story. So sad it ended so quickly. I believe he wanted to find true love. A love he never felt from his father. Not quit sure of how God could love such a Ragamuffin. This is a movie I think all should see. I know it really touched me and kept my attention through the whole movie.
User Review - 10/10 by Roy WRagamuffin is a compelling drama that is effective, if flawed. Rich was a close friend of mine. I knew him from college and beyond. The thread the film focuses on is perhaps the major theme in his life. The redemptive arc is both authentic and compelling. His demons are depicted, less so his angels. Rich was incredibly complex. He was playful and impish and significantly less verbally moody than depicted in the film. But, he did have an overwhelming angst--it's just that he mostly didn't talk about it. It came out in his music, in his rants at his concerts, and sometimes late at night over beers (or Long Islands). He was also fun and funny and incredibly irreverent. He loved being radical and controversial. He would say something shocking for mere joy of watching the reaction he would get. He would also give his stuff away. Not just a little bit or it...a lot of it...and all the time. And where ever he went, what he didn't give away, he left. He couldn't remember to take it with him. Stuff didn't mean much to him. He was curious about life; he was always learning and pursuing a million projects and ideas. His sorrow, for the most part, was below the surface. Above the surface was an overwhelming infectious spirit of joy and love and participation in life. Rich was nearly always present. He was passionate and involved. He deeply loved the people in his life and it was easy to become one of the people in his life. But, the darkness was there. It did drive him. And his darkness and longing had little to do with getting the right girl (this is the films biggest trivialization-though he did have some heart-breaking romances). Rich was always "longing for a shelter that is larger than this room." He quietly moved with an understanding that "this world in not my (his) home." If you want to make a movie about his life, then the darkness that he mostly suppressed had to be elevated to a place where it could be seen and redeemed. The film does this well. The movie affects people when they see it. Many are driven to confess, or at least talk about their own imperfection and struggle. Rich was a ragamuffin and so is this movie. Ragamuffin is a flawed, brilliant, inconsistent and ultimately inspiring film. The flaws with the beauty capture the spirit of Rich. It could have perhaps captured him better. There was certainly a whole lot more to his life than what was depicted. But the filmmakers got a good deal of it right. And the parts they got right were among the bits that mattered most.
