User Review - 10/10 by Sammi Janother favorite. It's so interesting and informative, just makes you want to learn more!
User Review - 10/10 by Jeff MHorrific and moving effort from Robert Stone. "You Are My Sunshine" was never so tragic a song as it is in this film.
User Review - 10/10 by James RWhat a concept; have faith in atomic bombs and get rid of your military - just like World War II was going to be our last and the fall of the USSR would bring freedom to the world, we're lead by either naive lifetime politicians or purposefully evil people. Another documented step backwards for the great West. Criminal for a handful of men to decide what is and is not worth total annihilation. Scary to think the discovery of nuclear weapons was a blessing from God, according to President Truman. These are the American bipolar moments that add fuel to the fire around the world.
User Review - 10/10 by Brandon SOne of the most incredible and sickening films I have ever seen.
User Review - 10/10 by Dan HWitness what happens when mankind plays with the power of God. A fascinating, and affecting film. Short, sweet and to the point, Radio Bikini is definitely a must watch and makes for fairly easy viewing despite it's serious subject matter.
User Review - 8/10 by Rebecca CThis is a pretty haunting documentary about the atomic bomb tests on the Bikini Atoll following WW2. There is no narration and this works great for the film, letting the archival footage and the two interviewees do the speaking. Stone also prefers to show this situation as an absurdly terrifying one, specifically with the sequences where they are tying up animals to see what radiation does to them with a liturgical song being played over it and when the second bomb goes off there is island music playing for the duration. The way that he deals with John Smitherman (the sailor who was hurt by the fallout) and does not reveal his deformity until the end is both captivating and disturbing. This would make a great companion piece to The Day After Trinity.
User Review - 8/10 by James BIncredibly depressing, but well done documentary on Operation Crossroads, containing both perspective on the displaced natives of Bikini and the American GIs who were exposed to dangerous amounts of radiation. The only missing element was the perspective of the crew of the Lucky Dragon, the Japanese Fishing vessel that was also exposed to deadly amounts of radiation. A sobering film that is a must for anyone with an interest in the Cold War.
User Review - 8/10 by Cory BInteresting documentary about the despicable nuclear explosions at Bikini Atoll, which destroyed a beautiful tropical paradise and displaced its residents for the sole purpose of showing the rest of the world that the United States had the biggest balls on earth. I did feel like there was something lacking in this documentary though - maybe because I'd seen most of the footage already in my favorite nuclear documentary "The Atomic Cafe" so it seemed a little worn-out, but if you haven't seen a documentary about this subject before, I highly recommend it.
User Review - 8/10 by Frankie RThis is a nice companion piece to Atomic Cafe. Many of these interviews follow up on the people introduced in Atomic Cafe who were instrumental in the implementation of atomic weapons in WW2. Atomic Cafe is made entirely of (brilliantly edited) archival footage: newsreels, public service announcements, army training films etc., it is a fantastic commentary on America and humanity. Radio Bikini does have (more current) interview segments that accompany their archival footage. Atomic Cafe does a better job at capturing the the zeitgeist of the Atomic Age (and is more fun as a film), but Radio Bikini has a lot of new footage that is both beautiful and horrifying. Watch Atomic Cafe first for maximum enjoyment.
User Review - 6/10 by Private UI love to see things blown to bits. This documentary is an orgy in atomic explosions. Robert Stones has made a monumental description of the surrealistic and allmost dadaistic policy motoring the latest steps in evolution of war.
