rec.arts.movies.reviewsMark R. LeeperIt is nice to see a film that does not talk down to its audience even if perhaps it goes a little far in the other direction.
Film Freak CentralBill ChambersA ramshackle police drama that resides in the upper-tier of Lumet's ouevre.
Urban CinefileAndrew L. UrbanA New York at odds with Woody Allen's, albeit also filled with angst; where Allen dissects the middle class in the throes of its own insecurities, Lumet cruises the underbelly
Washington PostHal HinsonUnfortunately, Lumet isn't the brawny social commentator he would like to be -- he's a Jimmy Breslin manque'.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzLumet pulls no punches showing a contemporary NYC plagued by racism, violence, crime, tribalism, cronyism, and corruption.

User ReviewMike H21 years ago the story written by a new york state supreme court judge.
User ReviewAnna BIt has a lot of problems, including a plot that seems at first to be overly complicated but eventually ends up being overly simplistic (and more than a little ridiculous), a tepid romance, and a really fucking terrible soundtrack. But Lumet kicks it along at an exciting pace (it's too long, but it somehow doesn't feel it), and the acting is excellent (apart from Lumet's daughter, who should stick to writing) so I enjoyed myself.
