User ReviewBrian HSad...disturbing...intense...and Alfred Hitchcock hasn't done as great of camera work as this in his entire career (one WHOLE shoot with precision for drama, intensity, suspense and emotion without error)...PLUS an ending that forces you to cry a tear - even if you're hearless. A delicately made movie with such emotion that makes you cry at the end...Watch it and you will know what I'm referring to.
User ReviewAngelos KThe most technically impressive movie I have ever seen. Say what you will about the breathtaking and immersive experience high budget movies like Avatar provide, PVC1 is proof positive you do not need millions of dollars in post-production or fancy camera work to create compelling content. All that is required is a good story, well told.
User ReviewDavid CSome of it seems a little ridiculous in its artistic camera angles used throughout the whole take (because I do the same thing after holding a camera for a long time - I begin to flip from side to side really slowly - it creates a cool sort of effect; especially since it is all just one shot [that's right, one shot]) which becomes a little tedious - and the acting isn't truly top notch; and some of the build up wasn't really that exciting, yet the final half hour is the some of the most suspenseful bit of film I've ever seen and the ending left me shaking. The story is tragic to begin with - an innocent family with what appears to be a decent amount of land is attacked by terrorists who want money. The family claims they don't have money - which they really don't - so the terrorists strap a bomb around the mother's neck made from four angular PVC pipes that hold wiring and chemicals within. Basically its a bomb that's going to pack a punch, all on one little old lady. The film takes place in real time, so it all happens before our eyes (we don't even get a real idea of who any of the characters are - except for a few small attempts to get history, but due to the reality of situation, we never really get to know anyone). It starts with terrorists attacking the home, then attaching the bomb, then the family going to the location to get the bomb removed, and then this and then that and we see every second (though a few seconds are sped up to keep pacing going). Despite 'artistic' ways to hold a camera (which was obviously preplanned, but it seems like the camera guy got bored and was trying to do something interesting with his time) and a bit of amateurish/slightly rushed acting, this is a perfect movie. It left me, again, literally shaking. Few movies can do that.
User ReviewMaría GEighty something minutes non stop. Real time, one scene, people! That means no editing at all, in case you still don't get it. A bomb is placed around a woman's neck for ransom; we follow the family's struggle to help her. This is an extremely low budget movie. Stathoulopoulos filmed, recorded sound, produced, directed, etc, you name it. He also co-wrote the sceenplay. It was filmed in Colombia, not Columbia, please! In a rural area out in the goonies. And this, well, something like this, really happened to a woman. Even though the acting is not great, you do get sucked in, you suffer for the family. I saw this on cable, On demand. Look for it where the independent films are, it's worth your effort!
User ReviewInesa SWhat amazes me about this movie is that despite the fact it folows a tragic story of a woman basically randomly chosen to die, people at the theater, myself included, couldn't stop laughing at times. The confusion was depicted in such a genious way, that it seem both impossible and probable. Definitely worth seeing!
User ReviewJustin HExtremely unique and impressive film making. One entire shot for the whole film creates a sense of really being there.
User ReviewTTT C(***): Thumbs Up Tense and chilling. An effective film that was actually shot using just a single shot!
User ReviewMark ZEqually gripping and distracting in its audacious approach (this film was shot in its entirety in one take), this bomb-disarmament thriller works best when the camera briefly roams away from the seemingly doomed matriarch (Merida Urquia) while the bomb around her nick ticks away. The film achieves genuine hair-raising tension in small portions, and the sound the bomb makes from time to time is enough to unsettle even the most hardened thriller junkie.
User ReviewMatthew HInteresting set up. Thugs raid family home as part of extortion plan. Rather than kidnap a family member they attach a bomb made of PVC-1 around the mother's neck. Shot in real time this 84-minute fuze chase has some interesting twists. It's not Hollywood suspense, but I think that is what I liked about this. Not a Hollywood ending either.
