"Pumping Iron," the film that turned the obscure sport of male bodybuilding into an overnight phenomenon and made Arnold Schwarzenegger a star, broke the ground. Now, experience PUMPING IRON II: THE WOMEN, a film that is changing the way the world views the female physique-creating "a new definition of the female form." Join four women as they prepare for the 1983 Caesars Palace World Cup Championship: the sultry and curvaceous Rachel McLish, the current champion; the almost manly, super-muscular Bev Francis, Rachel's toughest competition; and newcomers Lori Bowen and Carla Dunlap. Four women who have devoted their lives to the pursuit of their conception of the "perfect" female form, spending grueling hours torturing themselves on Nautilus machines and browning themselves under tanning lamps. Learn their personal struggles and public triumphs that make up their unique world as they struggle both with their bodies' limitations and the world's limitations on what that body ought to look like. If muscles make a man "masculine," what do they make a woman?

Movie Reviews

Chicago Sun-Times - 9/10 by Roger EbertYou walk into this movie expecting to see a lot of sweat, and you walk out with more to think about than you bargained for.
Spirituality and Practice - 6/10 by Frederic and Mary Ann BrussatAn entertaining and thought provoking survey of a sport at the crossroads.
User Review - 10/10 by Kate CThis is a fascinating documentary. It addresses at the time of women competing in body building competitions towards a more slim body rather than the bulky muscles that the sport had become known for and follows two competitors. Rachel McLish - the slim, feminine, socially acceptable one who tries to stick to her defined gender role within a sport which historically challenges that... and Bev Francis - the bulky, masculine one. Another interesting thing to note is the difference between this one and the first Pumping Iron. Particularly, how this one resembles softcore porn. Its as if the producers felt they had to overcompensate to make this movie more feminine and sexy so that it would appeal to a male viewership. As a result all of the women involved become objectified whether or not they are feminine enough.
User Review - 6/10 by Jamie FI was pleasantly surprised by this. Set in the earlier days of women's bodybuilding, most of the ladies don't look like muscular men wearing bikini's. Only one competitor, Australian Bev Francis, more resembles male than female. Strangely enough, that is what the sport was to become as the years passed. Thank god for fitness modelling today!!!
User Review - 4/10 by Keith PLacks the humour and drama of Pumping Iron, which was for Schwarzenegger, a career harbinger, and worth a Golden Globe for his mantle. Or Garage. The film's a suitable echo of it's precedent, and what it did do was present the female form in a muscular fashion years ahead of Linda Hamilton's in T2, which in turn inspired Madonna's physique soon after. But those were the Ninties. This film opened the new physical culture of the Eighties a new way. Gyms became a mains.
