Movie Reviews

Original-Cin - 7/10 by Kim HughesA dynamite ensemble cast and a truckload of heart keep the sentimental new comedy POMS from crumbling beneath multiple well-thumbed clichés including (but not limited to) plucky underdogs can triumph, friends are really important and life is short so live it fully.
RogerEbert.com - 6/10 by Nell MinowThis cast of old pros may not be up to flips and basket catches, but they keep things lively. Keaton is as radiant as ever and Weaver is clearly having a blast.
The Globe and Mail (Toronto) - 6/10 by Chandler LevackIt makes no sense that this fun, feel-good movie about senior citizen cheerleaders should waste so much precious screen time on miserly Keaton hacking up her Metamucil or whatever. If you’re going to make a movie about elderly cheerleaders, bring some brio and physicality to it.
TheWrap - 6/10 by Monica CastilloPoms is strongest when basking in the infectious enthusiasm of its cast. Keaton and Weaver could have easily phoned in their performances, but they do look like they’re having fun together with their crew of Golden Girls.
San Francisco Chronicle - 5/10 by G. Allen JohnsonAs corny and illogical as Poms is, it does have heart and a positive message about aging that is lifted (barely) above the level of cliche by the great cast, especially Keaton and Weaver, who provide a level of complexity that the script can’t.
The Associated Press - 5/10 by Lindsey BahrPoms really wants to be a sweet movie with a sweet message, but it’s hard to buy into it when none of the squad gets significant backstories, inner lives or even enough dialogue to give them distinct personalities. They’re just there to be punching bags for other characters and the movie.
Observer - 5/10 by Rex ReedIt’s the witless script by Shane Atkinson and the petrified direction by Zara Hayes that lands everyone in traction.
Movie Nation - 5/10 by Roger MooreThe jokes are strictly low-hanging fruit, but the film’s predictable path takes just enough care to avoid the places we’re sure we’re headed to sustain its 91 minutes.
Screen International - 5/10 by Sarah WardThe feature’s heart is in the right place, especially in advocating that age shouldn’t be a barrier. But Poms is a by-the-numbers feature which couples its empowering message with routine gags and muddled conflict.
Los Angeles Times - 4/10 by Katie WalshThe story is thin and merely serviceable at best, and it often feels like the film has barely been written.
