In 1950s Grey Rocks, Nova Scotia, a mysterious old seadog named Captain Charles Johnson comes to port and takes up residence in the inn of Kerstin Hawkins and her son, Jim. Once there, young Jim realizes that there is far more to that old sailor than meets the eye as Johnson offers to help on a school project about pirates in the region in ways Jim never imagined. All the while, that old sailor has his own business in that small town with a more direct link to its past that only Jim knows is possible.

| User ReviewTim WSinister old fart who may or may not be possessed but is apparently immortal insinuates himself into an unwitting family and introduces the concept of serious crime as a way of addressing small town politics. Kid being bullied? Threaten to kill the bully's dog. Fifteen minutes in and my 10 year old son reckoned the old guy had serious issues. So we obviously watched it right to the end, defying the urge to fall asleep to the soporific tones of Donald Sutherland. A bit disjointed and predictable in terms of plot, but you'll not watch a more morally questionable kids film than this, I'll wager. Go for it. |
