Video-Reviewmaster.com - 8/10 by Steve CrumJulie Christie in her Oscar role + Richard Lester direction. Enough said.
Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 8/10 by Dennis SchwartzI thought this film was more claptrap than anything else.
New York Times - 8/10 by Renata AdlerPetulia is a strange, lovely, nervous little film, very jaggedly cut (by Richard Lester, who also directed Help! and How I Won the War) so that the parts don't quite match and the plot is almost scattered through.
CinePassion - 6/10 by Fernando F. CroceJack-rabbiting technique embodies foreboding and dissonance rather than gimmicky whimsy
The Spectator - 6/10 by Penelope HoustonYou may not greatly take to Petulia, but don't miss it.
User Review - 10/10 by Kiera MAn unusually quirky woman named Petulia (Julie Christie) chases after a disillusioned, soon-to-be divorced man (George C. Scott). Chaos ensues. This is an excellent film. Roger Ebert said of it, "I am unable to find a single thing wrong with it." Richard Lester's direction is affecting and profound throughout. It's something of an organized mess. The performances were top-notch. George C. Scott is an actor to be reckoned with-- you can constantly sense his desperation to *feel* something-- and I think that's always a great quest for a character. And Julie Christie could have easily played someone very unlikable, but her charm is rooted in her character and she is a joy to watch. There's not much else to say, except that I am thoroughly impressed. 100%-- See it.
User Review - 10/10 by jay nso much for dr. kildare. georgr c. scott was exceptional in this! so much for the generation gap.
User Review - 10/10 by Stuart KA film made for multiple viewings. What seems on the surface to be a rather lame love melodrama is heightened by a radical editing style that would outrage people who were confused by INCEPTION. Upon seeing the film a second time, I have a completely different interpretation of what happened, and I imagine the next time I see I'll have yet another interpretation.
User Review - 10/10 by Dave SProbably the most devastating film of the sixties. Shot in San Francisco, just as the Haight-Ashbury scene was beginning to turn nasty, it charts an affair between the unhappily married arch kook Petulia (Julie Christie) and a recently divorced surgeon (George C. Scott). It?s the antithesis of the typical romance film, however, as its theme is the vast distances that exist between people who are ostensibly intimate. It depicts a modern society in which personal relationships have been replaced by interfaces with machines, and all of the characters seem to have lost touch with the world around them -- a theme that is boldly explored through a cut-up editing style of flashbacks and flashforwards. Christie and Scott are excellent in navigating this rocky terrain; and Richard Chamberlain is particularly impressive as Petulia?s callous and abusive husband, a man torn apart by his own vacant beauty. The exquisite photography is by Nicolas Roeg, who would borrow heavily from this film?s editing style in his own future work as a director. Petulia is a difficult film -- it requires several viewings, and will leave you in a funk after every one -- but it?s essential nonetheless.
User Review - 10/10 by Matthew TSaw this on the big screen at the Castro theatre a month ago (which was about 80% full) and it works incredibly well. There's so much to say about this exceptional film. A few remarks. Julie Christie at the height of her powers, never more beautiful, trying to save the newly-divorced (and shutting down) Scott is a unique portrayal of compassion and salvation. John Barry's score is gorgeous, as is the top-flight cinematography and production design. At the end, of some metaphorical signifiance is that, set in the Summer of Love, it knowingly details that love does not conquer all, nor is it all you need. Favorite dialogue, near the film's end (Petulia, to Archie); "We were barely more than a one night stand. We didn't even give each other a cold. Did I change you Archie?" (Archie). "Yes, you turned me into a kook." One of a kind: they broke the mold after this one--- a mature heartbreaker.
