Hindustan TimesGautaman BhaskaranOne of the nicest aspects about Jeethu Joseph's Papanasam in Tamil is the return of Kamal Haasan as we all once knew him, the great master actor.
The Times of IndiaM SuganthThe best thing about Papanasam is how convincingly it makes us forget the original Drishyam, and manages to stand on its own.
OutlookNamrata JoshiKamalahaasan, with his epic histrionics, holds the drama together. It's his film all the way and he digs into the role with relish, with Gautami giving him graceful company.
GuardianMike McCahillLength gives Papanasam the air of a slowburn modern morality play, winding its way through to a slyly concealed final twist.
User ReviewRangan RPapanasam is nothing less than a masterpiece. In fact its a thriller so finely crafted that I can't even think of another thriller in Tamil Cinema that has such keen attention to detail, a compelling story and well etched characters. The movie has a lengthy runtime of three hours but there wasn't a single lull and the credit has to go to Jeethu Joseph's masterful script. The movie is always a few steps ahead of you and actually answers all the questions you have in your head as you are watching. Theres no loose ends or plotholes which surprised me greatly as many tamil thrillers while entertaining have some logic gaps. The movie takes a good 30-40mins to set up its characters and because of this we are able to relate to the characters easily and root for them. Once the crime thriller portion of the movie starts you are on the edge of your seat throughout and the movie's climax is so satisfying that people actually clapped during my screening. The acting from the cast is excellent all across the board and once again Kamal knocks it out of the park. You don't see Kamal Hassan the actor on screen but you see Suyambu Lingam. I cannot wait to see Jeethu Joseph's future films and I will definitely be watching the Original Drishyam next. A+
User ReviewHari EThis certainly is an example of how a man's career as great as Kamal's will never come down. His acting is flawless, hell, who are we to comment on this man's acting! He lived the character of Suyambu Lingam and this is clear from the claps and whistles he receives after his performance. Remade from the Malayam film, Drishyam, this film does not loose its essence owing to the direction by the same mastermind. Jeethu Joseph shows it is possible to make a classy as a family drama-thriller, a genre never explored much in Indian Cinema. This film is one to watch for its preserved story which didn't lose to the actor's calling repute. A gem that did justice to its star cast. Notable appreciation goes to the film's supporting cast, from the innocent villagers in Delhi Ganesh and M.S.Bhaskar to the cunning an corrupt Kalabhavan Mani, who also returns after a long break.
User ReviewRajasekar MBest foreign film of the year. Unusual storyline. Be prepared for subtitles. The film is a bit long, but it will hold your attention.
User ReviewPraveen Kumar TKamal Haasan after a long time stuck well within the limits of the role and maintained dosage audience could bear. This is much better performance than the original Japanese inspiration Suspect X!
