Twice a year the Italian city of Siena goes crazy for the oldest horse race in the world: the Palio. Not your average race: strategy, bribery and corruption play as much a part as the skill of the riders. Horses are allocated by lot four days prior to the race. This is when the madness truly begins. In the eye of the storm stand the jockeys. Loved and loathed by the districts they represent, they forge alliances and make deals promising large cash sums to try and get the best start. Legendary rider Gigi Bruschelli has won 13 Palios in 16 years and is accused by his critics of monopolizing the race. He works the system, paying off younger jockeys and fixing the race with average horses. Two races away from beating the world record, Bruschelli will do anything to win. But one jockey stands in his way, his former trainee, a handsome young Sardinian, Giovanni Atzeni, who is quietly determined to challenge his old mentor. Less interested in bribes and collusion, he rides for the love of the race. PALIO is the thrilling story of a young 'outsider' keen to break in to the dangerous but lucrative race and the corrupt 'insider' who has manipulated the city of Siena for a decade. Their passionate and dramatic battle is an epic and cinematic tale of Italian life in microcosm.
Leave your thoughts about Palio.
The Mail on Sunday (UK)Matthew BondWith wonderful cinematography and pitch-perfect editing, Palio is documentary-making of the very highest order.
The Hollywood ReporterFrank ScheckWhile the races, which go back hundreds of years, last no more than 90 seconds each, Palio packs enough intrigue into its proceedings to practically fuel a miniseries.
The Herald (Scotland)Alison RowatHoming in on a young contender's fight to take the champion's crown, Cosima Spender's film is a gripping, sensual riot of colour and passions.
CineVueLucy PopescuThrough this absorbing, sometimes disturbing documentary, Spender reveals much about Italy's underworld, as well as the people's passion for spectacle, their machismo, pride and their rivalry.
Time OutTrevor JohnstonAn absolute eye-opener, this unusually rich sports portrait should be seen on the biggest screen you can find.
Movie TalkJason BestTo the uninitiated, Siena's Palio is simply a horse race in fancy dress... Spender's fascinating documentary gives us an insider's view of the passions that sustain the eight-centuries-old contest and the devious scheming that goes on behind the scenes.
Screen InternationalDavid D'ArcySpender...has made a rare kind of documentary – muscular and refined, and a splendour for the eyes.
NOW TorontoNorman WilnerRacing enthusiasts will be satisfied with the time spent in the stables and on the track, though I kept waiting for the film to push deeper into its corruption angle.
Chicago ReaderBen SachsThe interview subjects aren't particularly eloquent, though; they tend to stop the movie dead in its tracks.
NUVO NewsweeklySam WatermeierLike the best sports dramas, this one is a crowd-pleaser. As clichéd as this sounds, it's true; this is the kind of film that will make you want to stand up and cheer.
